Default Intake/Exhaust Question

I know their are different opionions regarding ramair/cold air kits, but my question is if you are running one (any one of them) and increasing the air coming in, does the stock exhaust system hurt what the performance of intake could be by not flowing enough exhaust? And if so is their an easy mod to help this that doesn't require changing the entire exhaust system? Thanks in advance for any insite here.

I noticed a big change when i changed my air filter to a halltech stinger with x pipe and full exhaust. I gained high end speed on the top end but noticed a loss in low end torque because of more free flow from my experience. Maybe just change the exhaust if you want a little more sound or just change the air filter.

On a stock engine the original exhaust will flow just as well as any aftermarket and won't hurt. You gain squat for HP increase by changing the exhaust. You will get a noticeable change increasing just your air intake and the stock exhaust can handle it. Aftermarket exhausts just sound a heck of a lot better.

Doing a H/C package, supercharger, turbo etc however will require changes to long tube headers, hi-flow cats, good xpipe etc to accomodate the increased air flow.

Thanks very much for the info, I always heard more air in = you need to let more air out, but in this case sounds like maybe the factory choked off the intake a little, so letting more air in will maximize the factory exhaust.

Thanks again, I am a newbe here so at times I feel guilty getting all this great info and help and don't really have much to offer back, but I guess as get a little senority I'll be able to contribute.

I know you get more HP with more air in, how does it effect mileage?

I noticed an immediate SOP increase when I added a Vortex Ram induction system. I did it first and it was a real improvement so I recommend it as a first step. I then installed several things in rapid order including Magnaflow X-pipe and cat back. B&B shorty headers, 80mm TB and LS6 intake (I have a 2000). They made improvements and I had to disable TC to feel the changes because the power would break the wheels loose and TC interfered with assessment. I installed everything myself and it was not difficult. Directions with good illustrations are available on the web, Shorty Headers are a 4 curse job, but can be done easily on the grarage floor because they are installed form the top and you only need a small amount of front end lift to crawl underneath to hook up to the doughnut.

The next really big improvement came from gears - 4.10 with my MN6. I had the differential change done for me because a lift is really helpful and my mechanic did it cheaply.

Yep, things run better with a better exhaust flow. If you get air in better you want to get air out better. The Z06 ti is a good one for you, about $600.

Good luck.

Intersting so you can get improved flow from a cat back system? I was thinking that would be primarly for sound, and that you would need a header system or a highflow cat to let more air out?
