I used oak flooring.

one long piece in front of the hold down for the top, so the whole unit is held in by pressure.

the individual pieces are held together by 2 sheet rock screws each.

then i made partitions going foward for trays or in your case a cooler.

another short piece butted up against the rear lip behind the seats.

do a search others have use craft foam covered in fabric, a tall (6inch) wood box... have fun!

I just built a long wooden box that runs the entire width of the car between the seats and the hold downs for the removable top. Its about 6 inches deep and I put 4 hinged lids on it (if I had this to do over again I probably would have used 3 instead, one behind each seat and one in the middle). Painted it black to match the interior. Its not fastened to the car in any way so I can remove the whole thing fairly easily if necessary. I can carry a lot of miscellaneous stuff in there.

Its a great project.

That's how we started out; making them for ourselves. Once they were done, we liked them so much that we decided to sell em.

Almost 300 of our VetteTrays out there so far.

Good luck with the project.

Thanks for all your comments and links. I completed the project this weekend. Used 2 layers of 3/4" foam glued together, cut holes for 2 9" x 12" baking tins from walmart, carpeted the whole thing and dropped in the 2 tins and put carpet in the bottom of the tins. Looks factory and matches the original carpet and my home made partition great. Thanks again, sorry no pictures. Ready for a road trip to the north Georgia mountains this weekend.
