A friend of mine is buying a 2003 convertable and would like to track it, but he would need to install a roll bar first. Is there a roll bar made for the convertables that could be welded to the frame, be safe on the track and also be able to put of the rag top as well?

Thanks!
Wolfe Racecraft makes a convertible bar. IMO, the location of the vertical post makes it a little risky to drive on the street w/o a helmet... it's so close to your head. Good quality though... had a vert bar of theirs in an fbody and it was pretty nice.
Hope someone posts some other solutions.... I'd like one also.

If you wanted to still use the wolfe racecraft, perhaps wrapping it would help.

Several commercially avaible roll bars have failed several HPDE tech inspections for road circuits. Be careful. Need to have 2" of head clearance from the top of the roll bar to the top of your helmet. ALso the roll bar must be padded.
4 point welded to the cars frame, no swing out door bars. main hoop needs one cross bar and one diagonal bar. 1 3/4" mild steel tubing with .120 inner diameter
Equal 5 or 6 point harness system for both seats too.

SCCA Solo I tech rules for auto-x and HPDEs.
Some good advice. I think HPDE requirements vary considerably from track to track. The 3 tracks nearst me (Texas Motor Speedway, Motorsports Ranch, and Hallett) all permit verts w/out roll bars in slower run groups. In fact, last Sunday I saw a Boxter S with just the chrome hoops running in the Red (fastest) group at MSR. Tearing up EVERYONE BTW... don't know what it had done, but it smoked some pretty fast cars. Not suggesting it's a good idea, rather that some organizations have much looser rules than others.
mark33: Good suggestion on the padding sounds like that's a requirement at some tracks anyway.
Depending on your height, the 2" rule make break the deal. Only so much room to get the top up.
MrX: Your friend should spend some time researching the requirements of the tracks he plans to frequent. Also, different organizations may have different requirements at the same track. That is the case here.
