Default Brake dust

tried to search for this but was unsuccessful...

I got my Z about a month ago and have noticed the brake dust is insane! After washing my wheels about 100 miles later they are black. I owned an FBody before this car which had chrome ZR1 wheels and they didnt get this dirty so quickly...

- Is it that my pads are ****ty? I dont know what pads are on there bc I bought the car used. What kind of pads should I get? Hawke?

- Also, while Im at it, what seem to be the most popular drilled/slotted rotors for this car?

thanks

Lots of guys switch to ceramic brake pads. They are not quite as good as the stock pads, but are a LOT less dusty.
As far as rotors go, Baer Eradispeeds seem very popular, but are not cheap. If you plan to track your car much, Hawke pads are good, avoid drilled rotors - they crack

the OEM pads were designed for track use and dust heavily......I switched to GM ceramic pads, as they are fine for street driving.....based on others' comments, though, I would not use ceramics on the track....

good info guys, looks like I might just need to switch to ceramic then...

You say avoid drilled rotors, but Eradispeeds are drilled though

I use ceramics on the fronts and the dust has been reduced 95%...For non-track (roadracing) street driving, they're fine..

Gene at Fred Beans had a special for the front and rears. They are a supporting vendor and great to deal with. GM Parts Direct also has them but I think Gene has a better deal. Look on the side post for the link to both places.
I put the ceramic on mine at about 200 miles and not a bit of problem or dust.

EDIT: The part numbers are
Front 88909667 $57.84
Rear 88909668 $36.42

These prices are off the www.gmpartsdirect.com web site. I think Gene at Fred Beans had them for a better price and shipping.

I put 3 coats of wax on the wheels. I wipe the dust off once every two weeks on the front wheels and once a month on rears, after washing the car. It not too bad, I keep them pretty clean and it is not that much work (well, except for the intial waxing). Don't want to give up braking perf so I live with it.

You lose a little bit of braking power, but likely not enough to be noticable. If you want to compare it go stand on your brakes with the stock pads and you'll more often than not kick on the ABS. I have yet to kick the ABS on with the ceramics.

They are still more than adequate for street driving.

Another common pad is the Hawk Street Pads.

I got mine from Autozone and they are great! Another benefit with ceramic pads is they don't squeak like the stock pads. The stock pads are so embarassing in slow traffic with light brakes they squeal like a pig. Not anymore!
