I drove my car from Virginia to Oklahoma, and back... Twice... Not a single rock hit the glass... I park the car for a while, drive it 30 minutes on a saturday and got hit 3 times in the windshield... small chips that I have to live with, no cracks... but I wouldn't hesitate to replace the glass if they cracked even a half an inch Most places will waive the insurance deductable and charge your insurance company more to cover it
I've been living with a quarter-inch chip (almost invisible) for four years. Called Allstate and they said I had a choice of either $100 (my deductible) or free if I used their guy.
Being the windshield is a safety and structural item, I decided to wait for another hit, but none has yet come. I think I'm going to get it done at a local body shop that does Ferraris.
Funny I was thinking of starting a thread similar to this one. Only mine are some paint chips ( not deep) on the hood. I figured I got them from following construction dump trucks. Just hate it when a new subdivision is being built. You got loose rocks that mess up the inner painted fender and and rocks from the tires from big rigs.

Grumps, that is horrible! Now, if you have HUD, you may certainly spend the extra dollars (via insurance, etc.) to replace the damaged windshield with the exact copy of the type of glass installed from GM at the factory for HUD C5's. However, in my experience, there is not much of a difference between the "HUD" windshield, versus, the regular windshield. Quite frankly, your illuminated LED HUD screen vitals will still be visible upon the "regular" windshield. The choice is yours. And, I am simply only stating this point to assist you in being aware of your options when such an incident occurs. However, make sure that when you finally go in for service that you completely cover your dashboard in an effort to prevent the installers from scratching and marring the dash with any broken glass during removal. Good luck to you. Do let us know how it all works out for you. Cheers.
