Default Sears Powder Coating Kit

In the 2005 Sears Tool Gift Guide there is a powder coating system listed for $139. It says that no compressor is required. Does anybody have one of these? If it works, it sounds like it would be good for small DIY projects.

saw that one myself - not sure what i'd powdercoat - but it definitely would pay for itself with just a few small jobs!

Powder coating is supposed to be baked. I can't imagine how you could do it with a kit, unless you already had a gargantuan industrial oven!

-edit-

Aha! I just looked at the kit. It says that you need to bake it in a 400F oven. That is fine as long as your part is small enough to fit in your kitchen oven (and the S.O. doesn't object).

Default Powder Coating

You can use a toaster oven for small parts, or buy an old range with
a good oven and use it for larger parts. I mostly use the toaster oven.

The gun I have requires about 8-10PSI from a compressor. I haven't
seen the Sears gun, but probably has a small air pump on it somewhere.

Do not use your oven that you cook food in. The powder coating process will contaminate it and you won't be able to cook food in it anymore.

That's OK. When I cook food in the oven, it's probably already contaminated!

A friend of mine bought a powder coating unit from Harbor Freight on sale for around $70.00 and has used it for several pieces. He says they came out great. I haven't seen them or tried anything yet, but hope to in the near future. He used a regular oven to bake the pieces. I guess I won't eat at his place anymore.

i actually saw a home DIY powder coating kit on the.....guess....DIY channel on the car restoratin series (the thunderbird episodes). they also said u can use a household oven only if u dont intend on cooking food in it later. but it looked very cool. hmmm...i wonder if i can find an old oven and put it in my new house thats being built???

DOES E.G. Know of this yet?

He'd probably have to find some high heat neon to put inside the oven to watch it cook!

Mr Blue... that's too funny... but does she know you feel this way???

Sorry I couldn't resist...

I have done 15" rims in my oven... when no one was home...
"...honey what's that smell?"
"oh I just tried my hand at some lasagna... it made the dog so I threw it away..."

Good luck... GUSTO

Alright, let me get this straight- I have a double wall oven that I put in for my wife last year and she loves it! I don't see any reason why I can't cook my rims and calipers in the bottom oven while she cooks nexts years turkey in the top oven! Sounds fair to me!

Well.... maybe if the "double-wall" is between them!!!

But hey, I say go for it... forgiveness is often easier to get than permission...

Good luck… you're probably gonna need it… GUSTO
