Default Why do our console lids only open 45 degrees?

Sorry if this is a stupid clown question, but my newly acquired c5's lid only opens 45 degrees. If this correct? I'd expect a console to open to full upright 90 degree position. This is ridiculous, trying to screw with that thing, it wont even stay up on its own.

It actually does open 90 degrees... it has to do with how you open it. If you just open it for some reason it goes to 45 degrees like you said. If you open it and then up upward on the lid slightly it will open the full amount. Do not know what someone was thinking when they engineered this one!

If you are sitting in the driver seat, open it 45%, then pull it towards you at the same time you pull up on it. The lifting motion is more of a 'towards you then up' as apposed to a direct 'up'.

Hope this makes sense.

On mine(04) I was disapointed that it only opened a little ways. Got to playing around with it amd found out that it is actually a double hinge thing. Open it up and then push it away from the hinge and it will open up to a full 90.

Got it fellas. I'll try it out tonight. It really didnt make sense that this thing would only open so far. I'll jerk it around and either break it or figure it out. Thanks guys.

It's a 2 stage open process so things don't go flying our of it, if the top is off or the windows are open.

The 1st stage only opens half, so you can get a quick glance and see if what you're looking for is in there...
once you see what you want, you open the lid all the way up.

No. Not really... But it sounded good right?

Actually, if you're only going to pop the gas cover, you only need to open the lid a little. If you need to arrange items, or use the accessory plug, pull it all the way open.
If you think about it, you probably do the quick flip more often than anything else.

Just pull up harder. The lid will open to 90 degrees, it just takes a little more effort.

I seem to recall (I dont have my C5 anymore) that the emergency brake got in the way a little bit too. If you try to open it while the emergency brake is engaged then that might be a little bit of the problem.

Its designed with the double hinge setup to allow it to open fully with the emergency brake engaged. With the brake disengaged, the lid opens to 90 degrees with little effort. With the brake engaged, you have to apply enough force to engage the double hinge.

Actually, IMO, its an example of good engineering, not bad, to solve a problem.

hmmm... my muffler bearings are stainless, not chrome. Maybe that's the problem.

It took me a few months to find a post on this topic. Without that post, I don't think I would have figured out the compound hinge thing...
