Does anybody know how UPS settles their damage claims. I just purchased a set of LS6/LS2 heads from a fellow Forum member and UPS managed to mangle one of them up. Damage was right at the edge of the combustion bowl and bottom of the head. We filed a claim and they picked it up today for inspection. Does anyone here have experience with UPS and how these issues are resolved?

Typically, what is suppose to happen is UPS will send out an insurance claims adjuster to inspect the damage. It's possible the insurance co. or UPS will ask you for a copy of the commercial invoice/receipt from the seller and a copy of the shipping receipt. You should have both sets of documents on hand and if not, get them just in case.
UPS' insurance bond will cover the charges, but you may have to be patient as they will have to wait for the adjuster to make the assessment of the damage, then issue a check to either yourself or UPS, who will in turn mail it to you.
I'm in the International Transportation industry and deal with commercialized freight and Customs brokerage on a daily basis. I had one of my customers freight arrive damaged due to the airline incompetence in cargo handling. The customer had their own insurance bond and were able to contact them to file a damage claim with their own adjuster and the steps mentioned above were taken. I had to be involved naturally because I was the freight forwarder/U.S. Customs broker that had the essential information to provide to the claims adjuster (i.e. commercial invoice, packing list, air waybill, etc...) It took them approx. 30 days to get their money.
It's possible that the same procedure may be used for your consignment, therefore I'm only preparing you for the worse case scenario.
I'll be happy to help in any way I can with advice/info.. Feel free to PM me.
I know how you feel, and can only say "Hang in there and be patient".

how much was it insured for. and they take a good look at how they are packaged...........
UPS and fed-ex won't take proper care of packages until the insurance is 2.5-3k.
I've had to do several claims with ups and it always takes forever - they get an F for customer support in my book. In one case they dropped a very expensive tape machine part ($10k) and dragged their heels for months before finally paying for it (it was insured for full value).
I've seen fed-ex mistreat some very expensive boxes as well ($30k and more)
UPS is bad for paying damage claims. It's a run around and they just deny the claim. I've filed two on different occasions and I'm zero for two. Good luck with yours!
Thats their motto. Yeah ok. seems the ship has a large hole in the bottom. Having delt with them in the transportation industry for many years,i have concluded they are not capable of handeling anybodys freight without damaging somthing. The OS&D department processes all claims and is adamant about denial of responsibility when paying claims for damage. It will take a month to settle so you must be paitent.
I can tell many horror stories about their service but i really don,t want to invoke the rath of other forum members. I would suggest you specifY FED X next time. They seem to be a lot easier to deal with and stay on top of things. Remember the Sampsonite luggage commercial.? The gorillia inside the cage, smashing the suitcase against the bars. Thats UPS,s training film on how to handle freight
I worked for UPS one winter as a drivers assistant (AKA B**CH) delivering packages around Christmas in upstate NY, and my driver didnt give a rats *** as to what the packages were. He would throw laptops, pc's, boxes marked as fragile didnt matter. One day there were about 5 or 6 large boxes that got tossed around like they were boxes of rags, come to find out later in the day as we were making the delivery to an Ambulance company that they were medical life saving equuipment at a cost of 50k (so told by the owner of said company) that the owner was anxiously waiting for. Unbelieveable.
Well all I can say is that I have had nothing but positive experiences with FedEx.
I have shipped numerous items from the US to the UK with FedEx and delivery times, packaging and general service have been second to none.
I'm sure that the sheer volume of goods shipped by couriers means that there will be damages but if you look at the overall percentage of items sent it should be minimal?
Thanks for the stories guys. I did contact UPS today and basically I am out of the loop as far as this getting handled. UPS will inspect the head and contact the shipper as to how this will be settled. To be continued..........

\ same with me, they first tell you the packaging wasn't good enough, or it's too heavy, or to big, and then they just drag their feet. I'll never use them again for good or big stuff.

Sorry - but this is shell game #1.
Next they will ask to see the packaging which obviously the shipper won't have. If you still have it they will make you send it back to the shipper. It will have stickers on it saying 'DAMAGED'. If they don't lose it on the return to the shipper, they will say the damage was done on the return route etc etc...
Damn, I wish I didn't know this stuff.
Sorry, but my experiences are pretty poor with claims on UPS.
Good Luck!!!!

EVeryone is quick to blame us and in some cases we deserve it and some cases we don't.
Every situation is different. #1 is if the person who sent you the package packed it properly. Something as valuable and delicate as a cylinder head should have been pasked in rigid foam or at the very least bubble wrapped. If it was packing peanuts only, I'm afraid you are out of luck. If in fact it was packaged properly, there is the slight cjhance that it was damaged to begin with and the shipper(I'm not accusing anyone, just citing an example) is trying to get over on us. It has happened many times in the past and that is the #1 reason why most claims are denied or take a million years to process.
There is too much to get into as far as the possibilities of what could have and should have happened.
I've been with the company for over 20 years, I've seen it all.
