That 80% is life expectancy, not level of oil in the engine. When 80% goes down to 50% and 30% don't freak out, it's not a measurement of how much oil is in the engine, just how much longer it's good to last, kind of like an experation date on a milk jug.
Just add a quart and you should be good. Just don't overfill.
This can cause false messages. Try resetting the message. You may have to reset it several times before it no longer comes back. Be careful adding oil. You don't want to overfill.
Just check the dipstick to confirm the warning message.
Mine did it once and sure enough, the oil marker was at the bottom of the cross mesh part on the dipstick, I put in more and never saw the message again.
I would say trust your eyes . If you checked the dipstick and the level was fine I would go with that. Thats more reliable than an electronic monitoring system. There are a few things that give this reading. Was the car level? Bad sending unit, etc. If the level on the stick reads full, I wouldn't add anything.
You don't necessarily have to be parked on a slope or nose down at the time. The message can sometimes appear while you're driving as a result of having recently parked on a slope or nose down. As others mentioned, check you oil level on the dipstick after the car has set on a level surface for some minutes. Good luck.
