I keep getting diferent answers. Of those of you w/ stock LS6 heads, did you have to fly cut your pistons to safely run the G5X3. So far I have 1 that says yes and 1 that said no. Thanks for the help
Joe
Thanks bud, Is there any specific reason you skipped the X2 cam? I getting close to buying my cam and I'm trying to decide between the X2 and the X3. Any Suggestions?
ECS said no fly cutting on mine, AFR 205 heads. FYI the G5-X3 cam will buck at low RPMs (below 1400rpm). It would not be fun if you drive in stop and go traffic. The power Check mine sign
when i got my G5X-2 cam the G5X-3 was in it's infants stage of developement. I then built another motor and was asked if i wanted to try the big daddy G5X-4. So being the mule that i am, i went for it. When the G5X-2 became available, i was one of the first to have it and the same is true with the G5X-4. I can say I was one of the first C5 owners to have the X4. If you get the X4 you will have to fly cut the pistions. There is no real reason why i skipped the X3 other than just wanting something different. It's a great cam that makes a lot of power with stock heads.
With Stock LS6 heads, there is no flycutting for the X2, X3, or the X4 on any LSA that we offer them in.
Now, if you have milled heads, as PHP stated, you will have to flycut.
As for Bucking, it really depends on the tune. I have a few customers who are quite talented with the tuning software, and report little to no bucking. Driving style, and your combination of parts may influence this as well.
Feel free to PM me if you have individual questions regarding this cam or a combo with this cam.
I had non milled AFR 205's with G5X3 cam, and I flycut mine on the intake side a bit just to be safe. I have no bucking with my 114LSA cam - I also have 3.90 gearing though...

Got mine on a 114 lsa. No cutting at all. Car runs good as hell. Love the cam. Bucking is when the motor surges for the cam being so big. I had this but got it all worked out with the tune, idles great at 900 and the lobe of a x-3 is unbeatable. With a good exhaust the lobe can be heard aways away..
As sprayedC5 mentioned, its low rpm surging due to a cam or more so the tune in my experience. It's not tha the cam is to big, it's just needs to be dialed in a tad more through the PCM.
Secondly, as far as a cam swap losing driveability some see that and some dont. Again with a good tune, there shouldnt be any driveability issues. It just takes time to get used to some of the new manurisms. You could put a small cam in your car and never even know its there, then again you could go to a much, much larger cam and notice everything from the way the car shakes side to side at idle to gas mileage. All of this is driveability.
Other mods are AFR 205 heads LG Pro Longtubes, FAST 90mm manifold and a LG/NW 90mm throttle body. Thats about it other than cosmetic and suspension upgades.
Here is a video of the idle. At the time my neighbor was over visiting and i just purchased that new 7.2 mega Pixel point N shoot camera. Here is a short clip with my buddy in the car.
Yeah just over 500rwhp I sent you the graph in a PM along with the detailed list of the mods done. I forgot to mention that the motor is also a forged bottom end.
