I still have the stock air box on my car. I know they pretty much suck, but I haven't had the chance to buy an upgrade yet. Anyways, the straps that hold the two pieces together are coming un-hooked after time. Is there a remedy for this other than buying an aftermarket filter settup?
I have been fighting the same issue. Glad to see your post. I don't see any adjustments for fixing this. I just know every time I pop the hood that will be the first thing I notice! It may be a good reason to upgrade to a black wing system. I'll be watching to see if someone has the magic answer to this issue.
You would be amazed how small the air intake opening of the stock airbox is. It's about 1 sq inch! I replaced mine with a Z06 airbox and modified it by cutting out the square in the middle which is about 4"x4" so it lets goobs more air in. You could just cut a hole in your stock box. If you want the Z06 air box Ken Fichtner's sells them reasonably or Eckler's sell a modded Z06 airbox like mine also reasonably. It also sounds really neat now. Deep throaty sound when you open her up!
Yes, just make a large square cut between the two tie downs on the front of the air box to allow more air in... Though this wont address the pre-existing tie problem...
If the straps that hold the cover on are loose you should be able to reattach them to their retaining slots on the bottom of the air filter box. If you loosen the locking clamps you should be able to seat the straps properly in their retaining slots. I would also recommend the 2002 ZO6 air box cover for more air.
I had the same issue! I was ready to BURN the sucker!!!
I used four small black zip ties and installed them in an X fashion to secure the metal strap on the box. It did a really good job of securing it in place and it never came back off.
12567571 INTAKE AIR COVER LS6 (air filter box) $38.44
Get it from Ken or GMpartsdirect.com
Thanks. I'm gonna cut a hole in it and use some zip ties for now. When I get a chance to upgrade I'll either buy an open element K&N settup or get the LS6 cover. Good info on this forum. Thanks all.
i bought the west coast filter element, and when taking the stock air box off to replace with the WC the stock box broke where the straps hook into the holes! in hindsight i wish i would have gotten the Blackwing but the west coast seems to let a lot more air in than stock.
What part broke?? If it is the area where the metal strap hooks to the box, just exoxy the strap to the box with JB Weld. It will never come off again! Or get some big Zip Ties and zip tie the cover to the box. It works like a champ!

mine broke where the two tabs are that hook into the bottom of the box securing the lid. One tab broke off on each side so it doesnt have anyway to fasten. Either way, im good because the west coast filter is an open element without any box needed. Still, would be nice to have the OEM box in good shape.
If I go to an open lid or increase the size of the intake hole in the lid, is there any problem if I get caught in a real bad rainstorm? What about hitting a deep puddle on the highway? I'd hate to inhale 1/2 a gallon of water at highway speed!!!
I had a modified stock box,a 1"square of velcro stopped the latches from popping loose. to be honest that setup was as good as the Hallltech I'm currently running

RonJ ...
I would say no bcause the air that comes into that filter has to travel through a series of channels that is so convoluted that it would be nearly impossible for water to make it up there. Air comes into the that area because of that giant air pump / aka LS1 that sucks it in.
However, if you had those nifty little screens that go behind the fog lights with the baffles cut out ( like i almost did ) then you would have cause for some concern in case of downpour or large puddles. Those allow air directly into that area which in theory is great for performance but bad in case of wet weather.
