When i lived in virginia in the navy, 4 of us sailors using our VA loan gaurentee certificate bought a house with a 3 car garage. I had a 67 Z28, in the garage was a 4'x6'x15' foot long pit under one of the garage spots. It was perfect for doing anything under the car. You can drop parts out the bottom, or wench them out the top. I cant imaging cutting a hole in the concrete and digging a hole then having someone line it with 8"x8"x16" blocks would cost that much, we also kept 2"x12"x4' boards over the hole when it wasnt being used.

I've got one. They are great. I can do an exhaust without lifting the car. Makes it nice when you have to work under the car but also need to do over the fender work. I even drive my ZTR mower over it to get the blades on and off for sharpening. You can't do that with a lift.
A good friend of mine had one when we were in high school...Loved it!!
My Father-in-law has one now... but his is difficult to get in and out of... and it's too short in length... so he rarely uses it...
I always thought I'd have one myself someday but my lift is awesome and it's one of those things you begin to realize the value and different things you can do with it after you get one....
Why couldn't you drive your mower onto one and then raise it to change the blades? Too wide of space between the runways?
That wouldn't be hard to fill that area in where needed... They also sell kits to fill them in completely for storage and other uses...
Anyway... The single biggest gain from my lift is obvious.... I park TWO cars in that spot now... SWEET!!

Hi MeekRN -
Would a grease pit work if you also wanted to wash cars in the garage (i.e. needed a floor drain...) ?
I did think about a pit in the planning stages of my garage....but I wanted the radiant heat in the floor and a floor drain so I could wash cars in the garage.
I would also think it would rival (if not exceed) the cost of a lift to have the crete cut and busted and hauled out, excavate the pit, form and pour the floor of the pit and stairs leading into it, lay up the block walls and do finish work etc.
Just my opinions as to why pits are not more popular.
