Default Car dvd player question.

Is it true you can only watch dvds while car is parked? I've been reading on the crutchfield website about different car dvd players and they all say you can watch them when the car is parked. I don't know if they say that just for a liability issue or not. So if anyone has personal experience with this please let me know. My wife loves watching movies when we go on road trips and I hate lugging around the damn laptop.

No, that is not true.

It is dependent on which player you get. The Pioneer AVIC N2 is locked out when you drive - but the N1 & D1 can be bypassed very easily. Some ALpine systems can be bypassed as well.

Do careful homework before buying - and check the Audio section for all the different models that allow you to bypass

No. Ask in the Audio section - they will know.

My son had a similar model which is now in his car in UK, the Kenwood 715 I think. He likes it a lot. Good spec and reasonable price at about $800. The catch is the nav box costs another $800.

If you want an integrated radio, nav, DVD player the Pioneer systems take a lot of beating. The N2 (formerly the N1) is a good compromise and you can pick one up for about $1500.

As EG says, with the N1 you can run the parking brake wire to ground and use the DVD/Nav funtions on the move. Might not be a great plan to watch DVDs when driving though

With N2 it has a software fix to stop you doing that

I bought a JVC KD-AVX1 for $520 bucks and had it installed @ Electronic Express. I paid an extra $15 bucks to have them do a bypass. The 3" monitor shows extremely clear even in the sun w/ the tops out.

(WWW.overstock.com) has the same player for $100 bucks cheaper.
