How did it look with the carpet over that? I would think you would be able to see it bulging out.

actually that is a common solution to mounting amps in a car without having to drill into the car itself. most use silicone becuase it's not permanet but some do use liquid nails (the tan stuff that you had to chisel)

As others have said, it looks like a hack install. Hopefully the former owners did not pay for work like that, but worse yet do something like that themselves.

On a related note. Anyone need a USED "Florida Boom Box Installation Kit"? I now seem to have one available. Comes with free glue, pre-attached at no extra charge, some assemly may be required.

(Nothing against Florida, but that is where the car came from with this stuff in it.)
