No mufflers
Now my local expert (neighbor) tells me that I am going to have all kinds of engine problems because of a lack of back pressure.
Could ya'll provide a few answers so I can print them out and let him know that running only catalytic converters and no mufflers will harm nothing??? Thanx, Mike
I have high flow cats, no mufflers and a blower, ain got no problems.
and ..I just bet most race cars dont have cats..lol...and most dont have mufflers (some do actually have them)....
the only aspect of his comment that is relevent, you should tune for a open, non restrictive exhaust,,,,
just the lenght of the c5 exhaust will create some back pressure, even if there are no mufflers..
your friend is WRONG......I have NEVER burnt a valve, fried a motor , blew a fuse or overheated a trans due to straight pipes. I have a straigh pipe on my tractor, my go kart, (allmost on the vette), and even straight pipes on my motorcycle. I have all sorts of problems
.....(I like to hear the music of a good motor)
That guys is wrong. First of all there is plenty of backpressure in the exhaust. Even if you removed the cats, ran headers with 3 inch exhaust with no mufflers you'd still have enough backpressure. He's being an overzealous car guy. He knows his theories but didn't put them into practice correctly.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I have TPIS LT, Random Tech Cats and 3" x-pipe with 3" straight pipes.
NO CODES, NO OBDII issues, - Less back pressure means more ponies

Seems I'm getting blamed for every derned thing these days...

I used to do allot of drag racing in the early and mid 70's, all with open headers. My times never increased with mufflers and I never damaged an engine.
The moral of the story is: never ask the greeter at WalMart what tires you should run at the track.
