I was told by a local in Phoenix that only transplanted Easterners are the only ones who grow grass on their lawns..

Looks good!

That's a true statement. That pic is the neighbors yard. I have granite in my front yard and only a 20'x45' patch of grass in the back. The grass is in place of the swimming pool which is a transplant thing too!

Smart move getting them to wet sand. I really don't like the orange peel on mine. If I even have the misfortune you had in the back of my mind I will be thinking "orange peel delete" mod.
