Default help me pick me a CAI

Ok gentlemean, I want to order the CIA tomorrow for my 03Z. Just about eliminated the vararam due to stories on installation and/or seal. Give me an opinion on a great CAI. Maybe Halltech Stinger SSM?? Currently using zip-tie mod that looks trashy. Currently put set of Stainless works 1 3/4 headers, X pipe high flow cats and tune at MDMC, 371 rwhp 362 rwtq

I was going to suggest the Vararam, but you eliminated it.....It definately helped me! I'd reconsider.

This comes up constantly. Let me just take a moment to speak on behalf of the vararam one last time. I'm going to say all I have to say here and avoid these threads in the future.

You cannot beat the vararam concept. Ram air induction has been scientifically proven.

- Vararam did not invent ram air induction.

- You need to tune for ram air induction for maximum benefit but it will work regardless.

- You will see the benefit in real world use - it will not work miracles on the dyno unless your dyno is mounted in a wind tunnel.

- High level racing teams have been using ram air induction for years in virtually every form of motorsport.

I'll provide some examples from my own racing since they're readily available. Follow my sig link if you'd like some more. Note the two big holes next to the front number plate - yes indeed, ram air induction.

If you want a racing level efficiency improvement - you want ram air induction. Cold air induction is not the same thing. Forcing air into a container with VOLUME that backs up and creates pressure only occurs with a system like the Vararam - or the one on the C5R/C6R if you can find out who makes it and make it fit under your hood, of course, with that devices airflow you'll need it's motor as well...

If you want a proven power leader go with the Vararam. On the fast Z06 list, i believe at least 80% of the fast guys run the Vararam, that should tell it all.

I don't know what other mods you have already done to your engine, but if it's basically stock, then you probably are not going to get much gain with any aftermarket air cleaner/box. You can actually lose performance with some.

Pretty much any cold air intake will make more power than one still contained in the engine bay. The Haltech Stinger and Blackwing are great and will give you some power, but they only draw hot air in. The benefit is that installation and servicing is the easiest.

I don't like the Vararam b/c it blocks the Z06 cold air screens, I run HPDEs in the car and that air flow helps cool the motor etc and I don't want that blocked by the vararam.

I run a BPP Vortex Rammer with puts the filter in an enclosure that draws cold air from outside of the engine bay. Also, the Vortex is the only one with a velocity stack filter which in theory would provide straighter air flow.

Here's a pic from their site...

I have the blackwing and I am happy with it, I did use the Vortex Rammer set up on my previous vette (1996 Grandsport Coupe) and I was also happy with that.

I thank you.

On the back straight at Road Atlanta just before the crest of the hill where the chicane is - just a couple of thou before the redline in fourth gear she rises up as if to salute the fans and just will not return to the ground until the shift to sixth gear is made. That was my favorite bike.

Had I written bolt-on list, you'd have a valid complaint.

I have the K&N kit on my car(not the 2 filter one), its basically just like the Haltech intake.

I have no dyno numbers or anything, and I didnt chose this intake, it was on the car when I bought it.

But I test drove 2 Z06's when I bought this car, both 01's with similar miles. One had a stock air intake, the one i bought had the K&N intake. And there IS a Seat of the pants increase!! I felt it thats why I chose the one with the K&N intake already installed sicne the cars were identical in price.

The stock airbox is very restrictive. ANY intake is an improvement.

I have a widemouth vararam with no leaks. Halltech's have been putting out good numbers as far as I can see. LG has some numbers that he could show you what kind of gain to expect.
