Oil Change Question

Default Oil Change Question

I've read all the archives and debates on how often and how many miles and how many quarts, but still have 2 questions (before I drain it and find out I need something). 1) Is there a washer on the drain bolt that gets replaced at each oil change, and 2) is there a torque spec on the bolt (or on the filter)?
Is there a comprehensive post on this?
I couldn't find one.

i think the washer is built onto the bolt

you should be able to free it with hand/arm pressure/force and tighten similarly if not snug plus a bit...

there is no pressure in the sump (if i understand it right) so really your just interested in tightening it from rattling free, over tighten with a tool will risk the next change turning into a nightmare ordeal of drilling out a stuck bolt , retapping it, etc


prefill your oil-filter , and swipe a lick of oil around its oring also (dont forget to retrieve the first oil filters seal in case its up there still)

its the usual rule to remove the bolt - lefty loosey.... as i was so vehemently spanked into recognizing ...

your doing the right thing to ask in advance

run the car for a bit before you are ready, warmer oil will drain nicely..

I couldn't find one.
1) washer is built into the Oil Pan Drain Plug.

2) 18 Ft Lbs for the Oil Pan Drain Plug. (Make sure it's good and tight)
Make the Oil Filter hand tight plus 1/4 turn. I just make it hand
tight which is pretty tight. Make sure to coat the Oil Filter gasket with oil before installation.

Thanks !!!! The torque spec was what i needed...(and whether there was a separate washer replaced at fill time).

Get one of these if the car doesn't already have one. I also use one of these too, cheap protection.

Torque for the oil filter is 22 foot - pounds ! I could never figure out why it is so much, this is over 2 turns ! I thought it might be due to aluminum block and thermal expansion.

I did the first oil change in my 04 Z last summer; my oil drain plug had a rubber o-ring seal. I replaced it eventhough the original one was probably still good.

The P/N is: 3536966; I paid $1.21 for it but I always replace them in each of my vehicles out of habit!

thanks for the replies, although there is contradictory information 18 ft/pds, vs 22 ft/lbs...
and some say the washer is built in, while some say rubber O ring, however, i'll find that out when i pull the plug the first time. Anybody have a different answer than 22 or 18 pounds torque, or want to confirm one of those? or is the "z" different than a non Z car.
and I'm ordering the magnetic plug today !!

the washer is fixed, .... and im fairly sure there is a layer of rubber on the inside part of it to function as the o-ring.

crap out some old PC hard drives and get the magnets from them , laythem on the outside of the oil filter and save yourself the 50$ for the magfilter (same magnets...just 'packaged in a nice housing... ... who cares about that for saving 50 bucks right?), the plug can filter out to ... well read about the magfilter plug AND oil-filter magnets here: http://www.mag-filter.com/
