Pull Key, wait 10 seconds!!

Pull Key, wait 10 seconds!!
Started up my 2000 a4 coupe and tried to take off then it just died on me. I got this message on my DIC "Pull Key, wait 10 seconds". Reminded me of when I had the dreaded "service column lock" message a few months ago. This time I just pulled the key and waited 10 seconds and started right up and now doing fine. No more messages. Does anyone have any idea why this happened?

Thats not what I wanted to hear. I was told by the guys at the dealership that did the recall (for the 2nd time) there was no physical way of ever having that problem agian.

Happened to me at the NASCAR race in Homestead. But I had already installed my CLB. But I did notice that the car would only idle. Could not touch the gas peddle or it would die. Did you column actually lock up? Someone on this forum said that if the chip in the key was wet or moist that the computer would misread the resistence and shut the car off. Don't know if its true. I pulle mine waited 10 seconds and it ran fine.

There is a possibility that your battery voltage is low or you have a ground problem. Any other electrical gremlins?
Do you know if they took out your locking plate? Does your steering wheel turn freely when there is no key in the ignition?
Did they put in the K- harness? ( GM version of a CLB) It might be malfunctioning.
You will find most Forum members ignore the dealer fix and do the CLB themselves.
The previous owner had the dealer recall done twice on my MN6 and I still had a lock issue until I installed the CLB.

I'm pretty sure they took the locking plate out, my steering wheel turns freely with or without key in ignition. They put a wiring harness in on one of the two recalls before i owned the car. they changed out a relay on that same wiring harness on another recall. Then they took out the wiring harness and put it back to stock on the last recall...
But the thing is I'm not getting the service column lock message. Just got the pull key and wait ten seconds message. Now everything is just fine. I have a fairly new battery 5 months old.

This happened to me when I first got my car. My steering column lock shorted frying my Body Contol Module. $1,018 later they replaced both. Check to see if there is a recall first though, because mine was a recall that had already been serviced. I know yours is in that category because it's a 2000 A4. you may not have to pay a dime. I did unfortunately because it was a reoccuring problem. Most 2000 A4 & newer and 97-99 mn6 fit in the recall.

Mine did this just the other day. I went out to warm up the car. It was parked out front of the shop on the pad. The pad has an incline to it & the shop is a ways away from the house so I thought I'd roll the car backwards towards the house. & let it warm up there. I put the key in & fired her up. Pushed the clutch in, released the brake & started to roll back & she died. I stopped fired back up & rolled & she died. Then I noticed the pull key & wait 10 secs. So I did & it worked fine after that. I can mention that the second time it died I was rolling & was able to turn the wheel. So would this be considered the same problem?

I had the recall on my 2000 a4 8 months ago, after i would get the 10 second pull key. Then I got the service column lock and took it back to the dealer.They replaced the k harness and a relay and payed for it.I think you mabe headed that way. Mark

This problem happened to me yesterday. But I drove it to work and back today with no problems at all. Maybe it was only an electrical glitch of some sort. I'll keep you all posted if it happens again.

I got that same message when I was ready to pull into the line-up at Willow Springs. I though I would miss my run. I did what the DIC said to do. The car started right up and I got out there. Never had that message before and never again since.

The "Pull Key" message doesn't always mean a column lock problem.
It just means that your key didn't do what it was supposed to.
The key may be wet or dirty.
It may be the security system preventing the car from being driven away.
Try another key or clean the key with alcohol and try again after 30 seconds.
