Hey people,
I have a ’02 targa top….maybe it’s only me (or it has been discussed, no luck finding) but when I take my targa top off it gets pretty windy/noisy in the cabin. Does someone make some sort of wind deflector or a “cure” for it?

Thanks in advance.

You could buy hatch vents or you could design and make your own. The key search words are 'hatch vents.'

I believe I saw a unit that attaches to the 2 front anchor posts for the removable room. It sticks up a couple of inches.... try Ecklers...pricey.

I'd like to hear a few comments from someone that has one as I find it not practical on a long highway trip with the roof off.

Bought a Windjammer to solve the annoyance the original poster stated. Had it for about an hour, and tested at all sorts of speeds. Up until about 55 mph, it does indeed alleviate the turbulence, HOWEVER, it actually causes MORE wind to come into the car, straight down from the top.

It also redirects some air around the side of the car, and once you hit 60 mph, you REALLY notice the wind noise bouncing off the outside pillars right behind your ears.

The fit is also something to be desired, as is the attachment design.

Needless to say, I returned it in a heartbeat.

I've always been suspect of the hatch vents, but tired of not being able to drive more than 30 mph in my coupe with the top off, in desperation I contacted the inventor of the rear hatch vents that prop the hatch open 1.5".

This guy was an engineer for 40 years, and guarantees that you'll be happy...period. When I asked how long the guarantee was, he alluded to "forever". He said that he owns the patents on these vents. I checked his pricing, and he was cheaper than any of this distributors, mostly because he doesn't overcharge on shipping.

Thinking I had nothing to lose but time....again.... I ordered a set. All I can say is WOW!!!! These things are the cat's meow.

Contrary to what you might think, they do not cause more air to travel through the car; they simply give any air that enters the cabin a place to go, instead of buffeting around inside the car. During my testing I even drove around with a small piece of paper the size of a receipt on the passenger seat to see if it would get whipped out of the car. With the windows up at 70mph, the paper didn't move at all.

Somehow, no exhaust comes in the car, either, thank heavens.

I can go as fast as I want now with the top down, and STILL hear the radio. I can drive at freeway speeds and still use my cell phone with my headset.

Don't waste your money on shipping to and from trying the Windjammer, just get the hatch vents. You won't be sorry.

The name of the company is Ventmaster. You should order direct. http://www.ventmaster.net

My apologies to the folks that make the Windjammer. Probably works well for Verts, but not nearly as good as the hatch vents on coupes.

I have a vert so I don't need these, but if I had a coupe I'd definitely try them.

I bought mine from Eckler's not long after I bought the car. The latches are definitely worth the price.

Thanks for sharing!!! I'm ordering one as we speak.
It's shame that I bought targa Vs Z06 just because of ability to use it and still having a sharp look when it's on (with all due respect to conv. owners). I got to drive a new C6, is the problem still there?

I just talked to Jerry the designer, he seemed like a good fella.Great customer sevice so far, I wish his product is going to be as good as his service.I was concerned in the begining when he described the way it worked, but then I think it will be just fined after he explained it all.

I too have a wind jammer for my coupe. The prior post was correct... at low speeds it does a decent job but at highway speeds it's not worth much. It's basically an over-priced piece of plexiglass. The attachment mechanism is primitive and a PITA.

I keep thinking about the hatch vents but I don't want to drive around with everyone thinking that my trunk is open.

If you mean the hatch vents, be sure you order the correct ones, yes that's plural, because they come in a set of two for coupes.

I'd much rather have the coupe than a Vert or a hardtop, though. With the targa top (and hatch vents), you end up with the best of both worlds. I made sure I got the two-top option, too, so when I want to be in a hardtop, I just use my painted top. It's also MUCH quieter in the car with the painted top on than the glass top, due to the painted top being contructed more like a real roof, with fiberglass construction, insulation, headliner, etc. I also only use the glass top in the winter, as the painted top offers more protection from the sun in hot weather. Be glad you have a couple, because unlike a Vert or FRC, you have more options. (No offense to Vert or FRC owners, just personal preference.)

I initially felt the same way, but you know what? It actually looks kind of cool. It almost looks like it's an option.

Yes, before buying my coupe, I drove a Vert, thinking it would be cool to have a convertible. Although I decided I don't like the design of the Vert tops (with them up I felt like I was in a car with a thin cover over my head), I did notice that with the top down and windows up at freeway speeds, wind noise and the wind itself is not a problem at all in a Vert. No need for even a Windjammer.

Do you have a full pic of your car with them in place? I've only seen a few closeups which don't really give an indication of how the setup looks as a whole.

I don't at the moment, but that can easily be done. We might have to wait a couple of days, cause it's raining here now. I don't have enough room in the garage to get you a good pic. But, I'll take one as soon as I can.

Here's a couple... My '01

Here's mine with my neighbors' flanking. The C4 latches look a lot cleaner because the glass comes up separate from the frame.

Too bad you don't have a side view. From a dead-on side view, my buddy says he thinks it looks like a spoiler of some sort. I'll try and get pics of mine tomorrow from the side.

BTW, do you still have those BSMs on the car, or did you take them off, too? Just curious.

Get the Ventmaster product - it works much better than the Windjammer item.

Let me refrase that :o ....I meant that I do like the coupe and also agree it's the best of both worlds. Moreover my Vet is black like your (plus chromies) so the glass (tinted) targe top blends in with the car .
Also, no problems with the rain and can I keep my rear material cover in place or I have to take it off?

I usually take mine off when the top is off because I don't like it flapping around. I figure it'll eventually fray somewhere if it flaps too much. I also have a top bag from Mid-America that protects my tops when they're in the back (I tried the ones from Eckler's, but they're of really low, low quality). You just have to make sure NOT to insert a top into a bag if the top is dirty. If you do, you'll scratch the top.

I agree, it does look like a spoiler. I did find that I had to adjust to the seemingly larger blind spot, and MANY people telling me "Hey dude, your hatch is open!"

BSM is gone. I like the smooth look better. See for yourself...
