Default Windshield fix

on my drive home from work today my windshield got spanked by a rock and left a crack...its not too big but it is still a crack. does anybody know the best way to fix this so that it does not get any bigger? also in a worse case scenario how much does a new windshield cost for a 98 coupe with the radio antenna on it? thanks for the help

If your insurance company will cover it, just get a new one. That way you don't have to worry about the crack spreading.

I agree. Glass coverage is usually included on your insurance.

thanks for the advice...right now the crack is only about the diameter of a dime (a little smaller actually). so if i can avoid paying a deductible i would like to do that.

Talk to your insurance company. Most of them will send out a windshield repair place for free to try to repair the crack for free. They can repair anything that can be covered by a dollar bill. they did the windshield on my Exploder and the repair is awesome. almost, nearly, could be, new and I was so thrilled I gave the guy a $20 tip.

The way he splained it to me was that because the windshield is a sandwich of, polymer, glass, polymer. only the outside is cracked and the windshield is still structuraly sound. They have a special machine that grinds out the damage and then they refill it with another layer of polymer. There IS a subtle difference for a few days but once it sets up, try to find the spot. ya cant.

This will have to be something I will have to remember for I am sure I will have this happen to one of my cars at some point

Most insurance companies are required to replace any broken windows with NO deductable.

Almost all glass shops now do chip repair, and the insurance company will usually waive the deductible if you try the repair before you replace the windshield. I have had several repairs and have never had one spread if the repair was done correctly.

I just had a chip about the size of a dime repaired. Called a local auto glass shop and they sent a repair men over. In 15 mins he filled the chip to prevent it from cracking anymore. It actually also made it a little less noticeable. Cost me $30 and I'm satisfied, beats $800 for a new hack job windshield install...

The key is "chip" repair. Typically, cracks cannot be repaired. I had a small crack in my widshield a couple of years ago. The repair was not good and I ended up having the insurance replace the windshield. It cost them $1300, but a coworker had his identical windshield replaced for about $400. Shop around. One good thing about getting yours replaced is that all those tiny pits that reflect light in all directions will be gone, at least for a while.

I had the same thing happen - twice in the same day. Left a gnarly gouge on the pass side, and a little nick on the drivers side.

I called my insurance and was trying to figure out what then were going to do about replacing the windshield - I have a $500 deductable, and I wasn't excited about forking that out.

Then the agent mentioned that I could get the windshield repaired. And it was free !!! They fill the holes and cracks with an epoxy. It makes the cracks less visible, but best of all, they do it onsite. they came right to my work and did it during the day while in the office.

Its also guaranteed - so if their patches fail, the windshield is replaced for free.

So it might be worth asking your insurance company about it...and like I said, it was free...which is a great price for anyone.

Why do so many of you guys not have $0 deductible galss coverage???

I just don't understand. It costs about $1 per month, and a single replacement pays for itself for the life of the car...

locally, they will only try a "chip" repair if the chip and any radial cracks can be covered by a dime.

In Kentucky we have windshield replace free as part of the insurance package. It is required by law is what I was told. I have had many windshields replaced on my other cars with no problems. Two were done at my work place and one in my driveway at home, and one I took into the the glass shop. No cost to me on any of them, nor any increase on my insurance bill later.

The techniques and quality of repairs have improved dramatically the past several years. I've had cracks as long as 5"-6" repaired and were practically invisible. My insurance company waives the deductible when the repair is done, versus a replacement.
