Yes many people have gutted their cats. Most elect to add long tube headers with after market catbacks. If you do this your car will stink like unburnt gas. If thing this is what you are referring to.

I am thinking about doing this, just have to look at it closer to see exactly what I am going to do in the spring. Car is put away for winter in a Car Capsule. Thinking about taking off the black boxes and putting on some high flow cats. Trying to decide if the high flow cats are a waste of money, I think they might be.

I think he means Muffler eliminaters, Eliminating the Mufflers all together and just run straight pipe from the cats.
I noticed when I did this to my C4, the exhaust note scavenged, kinda like a missing noise, but didnt have any problems, and it did sound much better then the Factory Garbage cans hanging out back.
