You should always have the title before giving the money, or at least at the swap at the same time. If no title did you get at least a bill of sale with the VIN number on it and someones signature? If so that may help you in showing that you did purchase the car. Also did you have some form of documentation showing how you paid for it?
-Sounds like you are up against a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo
-Good Luck

Who was the dealer, some fly by night outfit or a major dealer?

UPS doesn't lose packages very often, I would error on the concerned side of things. I also think you can apply for a lost title or something like that using the sales receipt for the car. Might want to call the DMV in California and see what they say, may have to call the DMV in Colorado as well.

Good luck.

If the title is clean (did you check with Carfax before comitting to the purchase?) then it should be no problem to do a paperless title or for the dealer to fill out a form for a new title. I recently did a paperless title on a car I sold. I somehow lost the pink slip during our move :o and when I sold the car, I just filled out the DMV forms and that was that. If you give me the VIN, I'll run a Carfax for you.

I would say to check the vin. Assuming everything checks out, which I'm sure it will, then with the documentation you have I would think that you could have a duplicate title made at the DMV for a small fee. I have done this in Utah, I'm not sure if your DMV is the same though.
Good luck I hope all turns out well.

Enjoy your car

Dan

The Carfax came back clean. Looks like a terrific find if the price was right. Don't sweat it, just ask the dealer to issue you a duplicate title or paperless title. It's going to require a little more effort, but you'll get 'er done.

As long as the selling dealer fills out the proper paperless title or duplicate title form and gets it to you this time, it will take no longer than if you had the actual title in hand when you go to register it.

Don't think so. Why? What's the rush? Are you planning to flip the car as soon as possible or something?

I purchased my car from a private party in Oregon. I’m in Northern California. A week or so after I bought the car, I had the registration, bill of sale, and signed pink slip in a folder in the trunk of another car, in anticipation of going to DMV the next day. That car was broken into and the folder was stolen, along with keys to everything I own, my laptop, and other assorted belongings. I went around and around with Oregon DMV, until they finally had me gather everything I needed, one piece at a time (took a few months!). In the meantime the seller moves and I have no way to contact him. Oregon says they’ll mail out a duplicate pink slip . . . But ONLY to the seller! . . . Who is long gone.

So the Oregon registration is good through Feb, 2006. I bought the car more than a year and a half ago. So I’ve let it slide all this time. Yes, Oregon has been notified that I own the car, but the transfer has been in limbo all this time. I do have photo copies of the pink slip and bill of sale. And my insurance company never asked for a copy of the registration???

Recently, while waiting for a tow truck to arrive to tow a friend’s Porsche that had spun out and hit a tree, I got talking with a CHP officer. He asked if I was visiting from Oregon. So I tell him the whole sorted story, crossing my fingers that he’s not going to tow my car too. He explained that I should just go to the California DMV and tell them what happened. He said they can register the car here once DMV runs a check on the VIN to verify the previous owner matches my copies, and that the car isn’t stolen. They’ll need to inspect the car for the VIN and engine number. But bottom line is you CAN register an out-of-state a car here in California without all the paper work in hand . . . At least according to this CHP officer.

I’ll find out once I get my car back out of the shop (oil leak) and get down to DMV.

Good luck!

Either you or the dealer needs to file for a lost title (sounds like the dealer needs to since it is currently his title that is lost). It should be a big deal, just a PITA while you wait. Get some temp tags from him while you wait and you should be fine.

Maybe I'm asking the obvious, but did the dealer provide you with a tracking number?
