I used to change my oil every 3,000 miles, but now I go by the oil life monitor, which usually shows it needs to be changed between 3,500 and 4,500 miles.
I went 5,000 miles once and had the oil analyzed. The analysis showed the oil still had plenty of additives left and could have gone a few thousand miles more. New oil has a total base number (TBN) of around 12, and my oil still had a TBN of over 5. A TBN of 1 would be about the lower limit.

GM put a lot of effort into the algorithms behind the oil monitor system and stakes their warranty on it.... why would anyone question it????
Change your oil once a year or when you get down to 10% of remaining oil life and you will be absolutely fine.

Mobil 1 5W30 or any other synthetic 5W30 that meets the GM test will do.
