It won't fare very well in a 40MPH head-on crash with a Kenworth but neither would most cars or an F150 for that matter.
I can vouch for that. I drive a Knworth T2000 for a living. On June 10th,2005 in New Albany, MS, a Saturn decided that it was a good idea to run about 75 in the rain and went airborn across the median and hit me in the left headlight with their passenger door. I was running about 50 because of traffic and rain. The passenger was killed instantly and the driver was ejected and airlifted to a hospital in Memphis. Last I heard she was alive but in critical condition. What makes a vehicle safe? Driving smart is the biggest key. I am safe in my Kenworth but I also feel safe in my C5. The car is designed as a performance car with safety in mind. I would rather be in my C5 than most anything out there.
Dang Bob.... that's a sad story. Kind of related I have an acquaintance (friend of a friend) who's a conductor for Norfolk-Southern Railroad. One night driving he came up on a guy who had been tied to the tracks... nothing he could do but run the guy over and stop the train, pretty sick.
certainly as others have more or less indicated, there are a million factors that can affect any one crash. if you've been lurking here any length of time, there are a number of members who have been involved in horrific crashes. certainly those who drive like idiots can & will be killed; however, it has always surprised me how well the c5 frame stands up to an incredible impact. the car may be destroyed but the occupants live to drive another day. again ymmv but overall the c5 is engineered to take one heck of a whack. i hope that you nor i ever have to find out. bub
First hand account!! Got rear ended at about 30-35mph by a '95 Dodge Ram 1500 truck as I was stopped on the interstate....pushed into a Ford F150. Both front and rear internal steel bumpers were bent and had to be replaced...my back hurt for 2 days...my neck hurt for 4 days but alots of advil cured both injuries. The car was fixed by Burke Corvettes and is tighter and looks better than factory. Absolutely no driveability problems!!
This guy is whacko,he starts threads, then doesn't reply, check out his other 2 that he started. He says he has a Vette, then he is checking carfax on one,now he wonders about safety?? Coo-Coo Coo-coo
I was in a head-on crash with a Honda Accord, my speed - 40 his speed ~35, and I walked away without a scratch. The car was about 2 feet shorter but it took the shot like a champ. The front wheels were crushed almost flat and the engine was pushed back a little bit but the windows didn't break.
Of couse it was a RED vette and everyone knows they are the toughest... except for the LeMans edition Z06's!
What has your body shop man been smoking? I'd hate to see a C5 (or any car for that matter) crashed at 200 M.P.H. I am betting that the car (and driver) would not withstand the force of impact at that speed.
All depends on the driver. It may do as good or better in a side impact against a GTO. But head on against an F-150. It's toast. If that's a concern. An F-150 would do better against an F-150.
Safer then a 7/11 store after 10:PM
Safer then coming home to your wife reeking of cheap perfume.
Safer then giving the finger to a Cop.
I could add more but I guess you get the point.
I can tell you that my insurance agent told me the C5 has a 5 star safety rating with them (state farm). My insurance is the same rate as it was on an 04 Lincoln LX (same coverage).

but sometimes the make believe ones ARE safer than the REAL ones
