Default Is Corvette a safe car?

I am thinking about getting an used 2001 Corvette and a bit concerned
about its safty. There is no published crash test results for Corvette.
For 2001 model, there are no side air bags. What happens if the car got hit from the side. But I have heard from an
ER doctor who claims Corvette is a safe car based on his ER room experience. He also claims that do not be fooled by the fiber glass body because it's only a shell.

A body shop manager also told me Corvette is a safe car because it's
been designed to stand for 200 MPH crash.

I do not intend to race the car, only want to drive it around 70MPH. Just wonder if it's a safe car for daily commute. Any comments regarding this issue?

All depends on the driver. It may do as good or better in a side impact against a GTO. But head on against an F-150. It's toast. If that's a concern. An F-150 would do better against an F-150.

What has your body shop man been smoking? I'd hate to see a C5 (or any car for that matter) crashed at 200 M.P.H. I am betting that the car (and driver) would not withstand the force of impact at that speed.

What other 2001 model are you considering that came with side air bags?

Or that can be had for the price of a 2001 'Vette?

A Corvette can be equiped with some of the best tires around, has a very good suspension and handleing charecteristics, has the power to get you away from trouble... I can go on and on...

But why? If you want a safe car get a Volvo and a Lobotomy and you can be like the rest of the drones on the highway.

Quit thinking about how you may die, and start thinking about how to LIVE... You are not going to get out of here alive, so you might as well enjoy yourself while you are here.

Yeah, I have a comment...something doesn't smell right.
Just last month you posted that you already owned an 2001 coupe and wanted answers on how to get your rear decklid to close properly and didn't even bother to acknowledge the responses you received.

If you're that concerned about safety then why did you buy the 2001 you already own anyway!!! It should be reasonable to assume that you should already have a pretty good idea of what the car is considering that you're already driving one

So do you plan on buying another 2001 Corvette so you can drive it only 70mph?? What a bunch of

Your bodyshop pal is an idiot and you should've told your doctor that your Corvette (you did say you already owned one right) isn't made out of fiberglass per se anymore...but I'm sure you already knew that.

Of course, if you crash it at 200mph, you might get a few scratches

I doubt any cars are built to withstand 200mph impact.......

They are safer IMO as they can stop much faster then most cars and can swerve around anything at any speed without loosing any control.....I know this from experience under heavy accelleration had to swerve hard and didn't loose traction at all.

They only thing I'm ever concerned about is in the rain, they tend to have spin the wheels often due to the massive amount of horsepower.

The book All Corvettes Are Red sez that after the first crash test, the design was modified because it was *too* stiff -- transferred too much impact forces to occupants. Later tests passed the then-new Federal side impact standards with no problems. The book also stated that the doors are thicker due to the new standards.

It passes all the federal safety standards as does every new car on the road in the United States. No car is designed to withstand a crash at 200 miles per hour. Well maybe an Indy car or something like that but not a passenger car. If you crash at that speed, they will be picking pieces of you and the car up for days.

Default Is Corvette a safe car?

The corvette is very, very safe until three people decide to go 13+ mph on a beautiful Saturday afternoon with no traffic! You know who you are

It won't fare very well in a 40MPH head-on crash with a Kenworth but neither would most cars or an F150 for that matter.

The Corvette has to pass the federally-mandated crash tests although those are at low speeds, but Chevrolet subjects the Corvette to crash testing at various speeds. The National Corvette Museum had a early C5 on display that was a crash test car and the cabin stayed intact at the indicated 35MPH crash test speed. The front of the car was pretty mangled, but it would have been a survivable crash.

Corvettes are safe cars to drive. What is unsafe are the idiots in the other cars who street race, drive drunk, or just plain should not be behind the wheel. There is no way to test against that.

Buy the Vette and enjoy it!

When I first began considering a Corvette in 2003 I sent away for their 50th anniversary DVD which explains all the various features. Once I saw how safe and nimble the car actually is, I felt totally comfortable getting one. No amount of safety features will prevent anyone from driving like a moron, nor will they likely save you from an idiot motorist running into you. Newton's three laws still prevail no matter what. What a Corvette does afford you is all the possible means to apply your skill to get/stay out of trouble while driving it. Like any machine, if you don't respect it, you're dead.

I feel very safe in my car... the chassis is amazing and it has dual airbags. Also, the car offers you the braking and handling abilities to avoid accidents. Furthermore it has an integral roll hoop in the chassis design and they fair very well in rollovers.
