Can anyone tell me if the Vigilante 3200 torque converter is manageable as a daily driver or should I go smaller with a comp cam custom grind (228/222 .588 .581 114.5) I would like to hear your advice on your daily driving with TC's.
I have the Vigilante 3200, with a 3.42 rear, & a C5R-427 with a 240-244 114 XER Cam. Cars still runs well enough to be a daily driver.
Sully,
Do you have any problems with traction on gravel or simple driving maneuvers? How exactly does a stall converter work? Is the car not going move unless it's at 3200RPM. If so, it would be difficult with all the dead pedal space. I just need someone to explain to me how it will respond at a stop light in traffic during normal driving conditions. Your help and experience would be appreciated.
No, its fine as far as traction and otherwise fine for a DD. It just puts you in a higher RPM band under acceleration. The only complaint I have is that it revs higher than stock when you are taking off, even slowly, and with my loud exhaust it is not very stealthy. Otherwise it's fine. Mine is a Fuddle Racing 3400 stall.

The car will still move at low RPMs, say 1500, it just doesn't move as much as a stock TC. When you take off, I would say that it feels similar to the feeling of letting out the clutch on a manual transmission. That's the best way to describe it. If you take off a little harder, it grabs more the higher you rev. The more you press the pedal, the more it feels like you are letting the clutch out. It's a little different, but only takes about 15 minutes to get used to.

Don't worry about driving the car. Just imagine this...I drove my wife (grandmother of 6) to Florida to pick up the Vette...~500 RWHP/RWTQ 427, high-stall converter, R Compound Race Tires...she gets behind the wheel & drove it (still does) like a champ.
With the converter, you can get great acceleration when you want it & drive conseratively if you need to.
Great info guys, now I understand a little bit more. One more question from this dumb sailor and I will leave it alone. If I am at a stop light or stopped anywhere, will the car idle at 3200RPM or will it idle where it is tuned too.

It will idle where you set it. One advantage to the higher stall is that you can set a higher idle, if necessary, say for a larger cam, and it wont be pulling against the brakes at a stop light.

I was looking at the fuddle racing as well. How do they stack up against Yank, and the vigilante. Their prices ARE more reasoable too. Are you satisfied with a fuddle. Where did you order your from tto?
After my heads and cam install and the water settles with my wife a torq converter is next!
Your in the same boat I am, but I just decided to do it all at once so I wouldn't hear her fuss after the next install. I figure the best time is to do it before valentines day, her birthday, or anniverssary. I have gone tactical on her, and she never saw me coming!
