Default Rusty rotors

I recently bought a set of NAPA rotors to replace the original ones
on our 99 coupe. I've noticed that there's rust on all four (near the center of the rotor nearest the hub). Is that normal? I don't remember that much rust on the old ones.

Any feedback would be appreciated

Thanks

The factory rotors have the "hats" painted black from the factory to keep them from rusting. The NAPA rotors aren't painted or Zinc coated so you will have to paint them. All you need to do is remove the rust and then paint them with high temp engine or caliper paint.

Your stock rotors were painted. The NAPA ones are unpainted. Pull your wheels, mask off the car(and calipers) and hit the rotrs with a scothbrite pad to knock the rust off. Then paint them with a good high temp spray paint (do a copule of good coats) and you'll be good to go.

Hi vette99coupe,

This is normal with these type of rotors. What you can do is paint them (and get the calipers while you are at it)... There are lot's of howto's on this forum... This was my Thanksgiving day project (between eating too much and watching the games of course )..

pics...

Evil Twin has several posts on this topic and recommends a 1,500 degree paint.
Others use 500 degree paint or engine/header paint...

Hi vette99coupe -

I was not aware that factory rotors had painted portions on them - niether my Z06 (purchased new) nor our 99 coupe (purchased used) has painted top-hats on the rotors.

I replaced the (rutsty) rotors on the 99 with sportbrakes drilled/slotted rotors.

On my z, I have always used a product called Amzoil MP (metal protectant). I have used it on my ffirearms for years, and I began using it on the rotors of my Z when I noticed them rusting and looking lick heck.

I spray the product onto a rag, wipe it on the rotor face and then use alcohol to wipe the swept area of the rotor to ensure I do not get MP in the brake pads.

The rotor top-hats will stay a nice greay metal color, as if they were new still.

Just offering an alternative to the above suggestions.

best regards -
