Im sure this has been beaten to death, But i am trying to find what size tires I can put on my stock rims that are wider. I went to the tire dealer and all I got was keep the same size because its going to make your speedometer off and your abs system not work correctly. Is there any way to just go wider without changing the height?

Don't forget to look at the actual tread width. Many tires with the same specs as runflats have the same tire width, but up to an inch less tread width.

How could that be? I thought the 275 or 295 or whatever was the tread width (in mm), not the width at the sidewall. Shouldn't that be standardized throughout the industry?

Technically you are right however, its not the tread width, its the section width, which are slightly different...for example, the section width should be the same through-out...however, some tires have more (or less) square shoulder blocking that make the tire APPEAR wider (or thinner). Also, if the tire has a wheel beed protector where the rubber flares out...all kinds of weird things...for the most part you are right though...
look at the picture 3/4 of the way down on the link i previously posted above...
Good luck!

I was amazed at the tread width section on tire rack. The stock tires have just about the highest tread width of all the tires. Even when you get up two or three sizes, the tread width is still the same or less than the run flats
Rian, you did your research!!! Thanks for info, its been a great help. Im sure when everyone saw my question they went off and started banging their heads against the wall! LOL..I think Im going with a chrome Z06 wheel and the 295/35-18 on the rear and the 265/40-17 on the front
