That's what a parts employee at a local Chevy dealer, who sells and services vettes, asked me when I showed him a part for my 04 coupe that I wanted to replace. I told him that "I'd like to replace this part on my C5". I thought he was kidding when he asked me, "What's a C5?'. I must admit I was caught off guard, but I calmly replied "It's a Corvette". Figuring he may a new employee, I explained that C5's were vette model years 97 - 04. Maybe I'm wrong in expecting that he should know. Anyway, as I was driving home shaking my head, I began to I should have told him that a C5 is one less than a C6....just didn't have the heart to.
I called a local Chevy dealership parts dept a while back. I told them I had a C5 and they told me they didn't stock large truck parts. I hung up immediately.

The C-5 is one of the largest aircraft in the world. It can carry outsize and oversize cargo intercontinental ranges and can take off or land in relatively short distances. Ground crews can load and off load the C-5 simultaneously at the front and rear cargo openings.

We Corvette people have to remember that first; most people who don't own a Corvette really have no clue about them. Second, there is no such thing as a C1,C2, C3, C4, C5, or C6 in any parts manual. They are Corvettes or Y bodies. The C designations are used among the Corvette crowd only, so I guess we really shouldn't knock those who don't know. I'm sure we Vette people are just as ignorant about terms such as 993, 996 etc. when it comes to Porsche model designations.

Yeah, but I don't WORK for Porsche and don't own one; my ignorance is understandable. That kid actually WORKED for a Chevy dealer; there's no excuse for his ignorance......unless he was a newby, but even then.......

If you walk into a Porsche dealership and talk to someone behind a Porsche parts counter who is wearing a Porsche shirt with pictures of Porsches all over the walls around them...Yes, I would expect them to know what a 993 and a 996 are.
Same goes for a Chevy dealership instead of giving me some comment.
I think the "C" terms only came into play with the C4. When I had my '68 &' 69 those terms were not used.
In fact I'm not sure they were even used for early C4s. You had a Vette or a Corvette. There was even a problem with the '68 since it was not a Stingray. The '63-'67s were Stingrays after the show car Stingray. In '68 there was no emblems on the car since it was really derived from the Manta Ray show car. Everybody still called them Stingrays so GM added the Emblems over the Gills, and they were then Stingrays??
This is all from memory so there may be some errors.

I had a '74 until 1976 and I had no idea it was a C3 until I bought my C5. I hate to admit this, but until the salesman told me it was a C5 and explained the term, I thought I was buying a Corvette

Same thing happened to me at probably the largest Chevy dealer in OKC!
Then the C5's came out, and the "Cx" style of designating the various Corvette eras became popular.
As a side note, not everyone agrees that the 1953-1955 Corvettes were the same generation as the 1956-1962 cars. I have a Corvette book from the late 1980's that refers to the 1984+ cars as the fifth generation of Corvette.
Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
