One of the pulleys started to squeel loudly today until the car warmed up. It drove me friggin nutz! Anyway, after popping the hood and looking at it, I found the pulley that was the culprit. I want to change that and the belt. Heck, while I'm at it, I might as well change all the belts. Is there a special tool that I need to release the tension on the pulleys? Or do I need to grab a crow bar and go at it with brute strength and raw ignorance?
dont need to go as far as crow bar and brute strength. if you look at the tensioner pulley, there should be a bolt or square opening. Havent looked at the vettes, but i know cars have either of those. Then use a socket wrench either jsut the socket wrench if you have the square opening, or a socket to fit that bolt. and then just turn the wrench down away fromt eh belts and it will losen tension enough to get the belts off. if its hard to move the tension try the other direction. Hope this works for ya. has for me
put a (i believe) 15mm socket on the bolt holding the tensioner pulley with a nice 1/2" wrench .. and pull towards the passenger side .. ive yet to have to remove the ac belt so you're on your own for that one.
I had the same problem with my wifes Suburban. First we replaced the tensioner and belts - still squeeled. Than replaced the water pump - still squeeled. Than replaced the new belts with other new belts - squeeling stoped! And the Suburban is quieter also.

hmmm... no square hole to put a ratchet wrench in there and treat it like a normal tensioner. I'll see if the socket trick works if it's not raining when I get home. Thanks.
