hi there,as soon as read your post I had a good idea what the noise could be, that was a good discription of the sound, exactly what mine sounded like, I know they are different years but when I had my 95 I had the same thing happen, dealer tried telling me it was normal, so I took same year vette, a friends from different dealer to them and showed them it wasnt NORMAL, and he agreed that mine shouldnt do it, so after about 3 or 4 different things they tried, including changing shocks, it turned out to be rear hub assembly, it happen 2 times on drivers side and 1 time on passenger side, all under warranty, hope this might help, Ozzie

There is a "normal" click mentioned in the owners manual. This is the quote: "When you start your vehicle and begin to drive away, your anti-lock brake system will check itself. you may hear a momentary motor or clicking noise while this test is going on, and you may even notice that your brake pedal moves a little. This is normal."

Thanks, but this isn't what I am hearing. It doesn't happen when I start to drive away. And it is a series of two or three clicks, when at a dead stop, shifting between D and R.
I like the worn hub theory.
I'm taking the car in this morning a little after 10 AM Pacific. It'll be interesting to see what they say.
Mine also does the same thing. I have had it on a hoist and couldn't find anything. My 98 Z28 also did that. It did it since it had 10000 miles. I guess i'm not going to worry about it.
I determined that it only makes the clicking noises when shifting between Drive and Reverse and vice versa. So I drove over to the dealership this afternoon, unannounced and asked my service adviser to take a listen and see what he thought. He went into the shop to ask the transmission guys, but they were tied up with what they were working on and asked me to bring it back anytime late in the morning this week when they can give it a listen and determine whether it's within normal parameters or the transmission needs to be opened up. They said it could go either way. So, the saga continues. I'll post again once I get a diagnosis. I plan to drive it back over tomorrow morning and see what they think. Other than this weird click-settling sound going on, the transmission feels very tight. Shifts are crisp. No other issues. I'll report back tomorrow.
I have the same problem in mine and i only have 11k on my '04. Also on more than one occasion i had the tranny slip on me. I believe it was during a 3-4 shift (i was doing about 40 and gave it some moderate to heavy gas to pass). Can anyone recommend a dealer on LI (prefferably Nassau County)? I bought the car out of state. Thanks

Okay, good news. The dealership made short work of the diagnosis and cured the problem in record time. I was in and outa there in about 20 minutes. High marks again to Paradise Chevrolet in Temecula, CA.
The driveshaft splines needed greasing.
Yep. That was all there was to it. Eliminated the clicks entirely.
As a funny aside, I saw, for the second day in a row, parked in the service department, a black Z06 C5 whose driver snubbed my wave the other day when he pulled up alongside me at a light. Serves the tool right!

Might it be that what you perceived as a slip might have just been the lag as it was actually stepping down from 4-3 in order to pass?
And thanks, Jeff! I'm glad it was something so simple and easy to remedy! That gives me more confidence in my car, and my local dealer service dept!
Great news! Since I don't really know what all it took to fix the problem did they have to tear into it pretty good to grease it? The reason I ask is I wonder if its something I could do myself and avoid a trip to the dealer.

I wouldn't think that it was too complicated. I mean, I was in and out of there in no time. My service advisor said that it's something that should be lubed along with everything else during oil changes. Made it sound pretty routine.
I wish a service manual was available for these cars. It would make this kind of maintenance a lot easier.

Thanks for the info. Will check into it. I'm like you, don't really think its doing any real damage, just annoying.
