Took my C5 in to have a customer of mine do the install on a Starmate. I had looked at pics of several installs where people had put it behind the door of the cigarette ligher/ashtray bin. I wanted something cleaner and man did he deliver. He cut out the cigarette lighter/ashtray bin with a rotozip and hand-built a custom piece out for the Starmate unit. It appears as close to OEM as I could have imagined. The door closes completely or pushes all of the way back for a very clean look. The antenna is in the taillight. I told him where I wanted it and he was skeptical. When I showed up to pick it up he was shaking his head because I was getting better reception inside of his building with the antenna inside my car than 90% of the cars with the antenna mounted externally.
can you post a pic of it in the taillight? I just got the kit for Christmas ( late gift ) and was trying to get ideas on how to install it. I don't like the look on the roof and such...
I have a sirius starmate (first gen) on a stalk next to the console. It looks great, but the passengers bump it. I want to go with the new Starmate Replay in the ashtray area.
Dremeled down the left and right sides of where the ashtray was, installed two strips of velcro on those side posts and the unit sits right in. Recessed enough to permit the door to close. Antenna mounted in same location as Ron C's noted in his post.
Here is a shot of the antenna mounted on the rear bumper support.
Very nice install.
Wouldn't you think that some engineer with these car companies could have figured out something like this place to install the antennae insted of putting a square **** on the roof?
i just bought my wife an 06 Mercedes with Sirius and that F***Ing antenna looks terrible on the roof. It ruins the clean lines of the car.
I suspect one of the reasons they place the antenna out in the open is to minimize any interference with the signal. This way the dealers don't have to deal with any potential signal issues. By hiding the antenna, as some of us have, there is a possibility of blocking the signal in certain situations. Mine is actually mounted just below the surface of the rear facia on a metal support bracket I fabricated and bolted to the rear tub. It worked fine when mounted on the rear metal bumper, just thought moving it up would decrease any signal problems.
Can you mount the antenna in the rear bumper without removing the whole bumper? How do you install it there? Thanks in advance!
Just remove either one or both of the rear tail lamps, I did the passenger side since thats the most direct route for running the antenna wire up to the dash. The magnetic antenna mounts right onto the steel rear bumper. Just clean a part of the surface area and it will stick there just fine. I drilled a small hole in the rear compartment wall to pass the antenna wire into the rear compartment. Then ran it up behind the compartment carpeting under the rear fenders, behind the passenger front seat carpeted section, down the center tunnel (under the console) all the way up to the front next to the radio/ashtray area. Very simple.
