Whatever the manufacturer recommends on top of the oil filler cap. I figure they know better than I as to what is best for the engine, and for the C5 that would be Mobil 1 5W-30.
It was tested and proven using this. Why risk using something else?
I use AMSOIL 5W40 European in all my cars. I buy it directly from AMSOIL and have it delivered right to my door. The offer a variety of products including oil filters.
I used to purchase my oil at WalMart, cheapest, but AMSOIL, I believe, is a better blend and covers a wider driving condition range than Mobil 1.

Where did it ever say that GM tested Mobil 1 in the LS1 and found it to be absolutely the best oil to use? It doesn't say that anywhere. The filler cap only says it's the factory fill.
And even if it did say somewhere that GM recommends Mobil 1, that still does not mean it is the best possible choice. Mobil 1 is factory fill in many cars all around the world, and it's mainly because they are such a huge company that they can go for these big contracts much easier than a smaller oil company can.
This thread proves that good advertising can go a long way. Mobil 1 makes everyone believe that they are the best, but they really are not. It's a good oil yes, but not the number one choice by any means. There are many better oils out there (Redline, Amsoil, German Castrol and the list goes on) Spend some time on BOBISTHEOILGUY.com and you'll find out more info on oil than you'll know what to do with.

For all you Mobil 1 fans, take a look at the picture of the cap above and try to find where it says GM recommends Mobil 1. Mobil 1 is factory fill... marketing at its best.
For those that have read the owner's manual, you'll see that the actual requirement is for an oil meeting GM Standard 4718M and many synthetics meet that standard.
In amplification of what Patman stated above, here is a series of used oil analysis tests done on a fellow forum member's 99 C5. The 3/11 test was German Castrol 0w30, the 5/06 and 6/24 tests were AMSOIL Series 2000 0w30, and the 10/28 report was again German Castrol 0w30. Compare the wear metal levels in this report (primarliy aluminum, iron, copper, lead) against the labs univeral average for this motor family and draw your own conclusions as to how these two oils perform.
