Default early c5 tire sensor swap

i recently purchased a 1998 convertible with the later c5 thin spoke polished rims. the seller included the original wagon wheel rims. he said there is no way the '98 original tire sensors will work with my newer rims since '97 to '99 sensors consists of a metal band around the inside of the rim and 2000 and up sensors are in the valve stem. is this correct or can i swap them.if i can is this a job for the dealer ? if not, what would be the solution to have functional tire sensors again ?

he is wrong...or you misunderstood him.

The sensors have always been "in the valvestem"
97-00 sensors do not have a band around the wheel. Sometimes you have to use a band on aftermarket wheels...but the sensors never had a band. I bought brand new sensors from a forum vendor and they were installed on some machine face black zo6 wheels just as they were in the original wagon wheels.

As far as I know, you should be able to break the bead on your wagon wheels and take them out...then have them put in you thin spokes.

personally, I woud go to a dealer as a last resort...are there any decent custom wheel places in your area?

After they are installed, you will need to train the sensors. Very easy and there is a write-up in the Tech-tip section.

Total The sensors will work on the wheels just fine. Both the old and new sensors work by attaching to the wheel at the valve stem.

Here is an old style sensor ('97-'00)

Here is a new style sensor ('01-'04)

makes me wonder if it was an honest mistake or maybe the seller was hiding the fact that the receiver isn't working.

I believe the TPS with the metal bands were from the first generation sensors of the C4's

I put the 00-04 thin spokes on my 99..The tire guy swapped my sensors on the rims with no problem at all...I do know you can't mix the sensors so if you have the earlier model C5 the later style sensors won't work on your car...Congrats on dumping the hideous wagon wheels..
