Very small % of 01s had the oil issue about as many as the 02s had--Go for low mile and pristine condition--

I was in your same situation about a month ago. Finally decided on a black 02 Z06 with 63k miles and love it. For some, perception is reality. With the controversy surrounding the 01 with supposed oil burning issues and lack of 405 hp rating I thought resale value. That is what made me decide on the 02. One day I will probably upgrade to another vette. There are some people that run and hide from an 01 which could make it a hard sell. There are good deals on 02 and newer vettes. I would not be afraid of an 01 if it was a good deal and well cared for. I just could not find one.

Josh:

I was in a similar dilemma a few years ago myself. I came across my MY '01 in Feb 2003 with 9900 miles for a ridiculously cheap price(let's just say it would still be a good deal today). I do understand that some '01s had issues(most first model year cars do), but I never noticed any problems with mine other than the stock clutch. It was *very* finicky and if I slipped it too much coming out of the hole at the strip it would heat up and slip throughout the entire run... That said:

The car got 30+mpg on the highway.
The car didn't 'use' oil in my opinion; about 1 quart every 2500 miles(which is completely acceptable to me for a performance engine)
The car ran 12.2@115 *bone stock*, no mods at all
The car ran equal to a certain persons "ASP Weapon" while on a 'test track' in BG from a 45mph roll. I had a passenger, he had CAI and headers(Sorry George)

The only issues I've had is:
new battery
rear axle leak

Given all this info, if I didn't find my car for such a steal, I would have probably opted for an '02. I have no regrets, but you should buy the newest, nicest car you can. If that's an '01 great, if it's an 02, then go for the newer car.

Thanks Brian, I appreciate your input.

I really like the 01 that I found b/c its white.

Ideally, I want the 02 BUT..... I don't want a large car payment. I could get an 02 but Im really not wanting to spend over 25-26k.

Hell, Im looking at a SWEET black 00 FRC on saturday. All the freaking cars are black, which is crazy hot in Florida but we'll see.

I want black. It hides the body panel lines and with a good window tint, can look menacing. You can powder coat the wheels and have it all black (metro speed vehicle) or get shiny rims to offset the black. My C6Z will be black.

I agree. Black looks great, I don't like ALL black wheels tho. Need polished trim rings at least.

There is a tad bit of difference between Florida heat and Colorado.
