I just received my 2006 consumers report auto issue. I noticed that the engine for the 2002 corvette was rated far worse than average. Years on either side 2001, 2003 were ok. What is different on, or in the 2002 engine???
Not a single problem with my 02... Consumer Report is a poor place to get Corvette info. The oil consumption problem was fix in 02, although the "piston slap" was still there, just like all LS2 engines. My 2002 runs perfect and I never have had a single problem. (knock on wood)...
I read that Consumer Reports issue (this months) too. I had to chuckle to myself as read over some to the ratings. I had to chuckle over some the wild swings in ratings between the '98 and '00 model years on things like engines, etc. were they were basicly the same. Some for the other years too. Then I saw were the '01 model scored the highest mark for engine! I'm not knocking the '01's, but the oil issues that they had, I would have figured that would be one of the years to be picked to have the highest racked engine.
You have to remember that "Consumer Reports" is just a tool when shopping for items and should be used as such. It's not Gospel.
Consumer Reports wouldn't know a Corvette engine from a hole in the ground. Don't think I'd be making any Vette judgements based on what they say.
OK, besides my opinion of Consumer Reports lack of high performance car knowledge, I should also say that my 2002 C5 has 55K miles and never a problem. The only thing I've even replaced is the battery.
