Turning 25 in May so I took the big step and bought a 03 EB Z06 w/ 17k miles. All stock down to the original filter and tires. It is my dream car but I have one problem. Do tires get hard after time and go bad? I am asking because I lowered my tires to 28psi and still no way to grip (even at the end of third and shifting into fourth). It is rediculous, I had a Z-28 w/ spray before this and it gripped better. Just wondered it anyone heard of tires getting hard after time? My friend has a 02 Z06 and can launch at 2k, I can't even roll on the gas in first. Kinda sucks I want to fell the pull like my friends.
its the stock tires for the most part. Tires can go bad in the sense of how was the car stored if ever stored. A lot of eviromental factors come into play here. Some have had tires go bad after a few years way before tire tread would come into play. Does your friend have stock tires as well?

Temperatures have a big effect on tires. Is the weather still cold or very cool where you live.
The F1 Supercar tires are best in tempertures between 70 - 85 degrees, (I think I got that temp range right).
I think tire manufacturers normally say that the carcuss is designed for about 3 years before it starts to deteriorate. As someone pointed out, a lot depends on UV exposure, etc.

I have new (never on the wheel) SC's in my garage that are a year old now. I can't put them on because the car(C4) is ruined (SUV hit it).
Can I expect that the Garage will keep these tires new for a year? (when I get the Z06)

You should be OK if you keep them out of sunlight and away from any electrical equipment/motors that could generate ozone. I wonder if coating them with ?????? (something to act as a sealant) would help (probably couldn't hurt). Good luck.
Tread depth has nothing to do with performance tire life.
as ppl have mention exposure to UV light, weather, and one other thing is heat cycles. How much has that tire been up to competion temp?/
If you looking at milage, I have some tires in my basment with less the 500 miles, I can sell you cheap. Only problem is they have 12-14 heat cycles and they are shot.
For normal GY F1 or street tires on a corvette, IMHO tire life is 2 years max no matter who little the car has driven.

Back when I was MXing, I kept tires "in advance".
I always put them in black garbage bags in addition to "out of sunlight, in a cool, dry place".
I really don't know if this helps by keeping air from circulating over the tires,
but it can't hurt, and it made me feel better.

That's funny. I just bought an '03 with 17k miles too (MY though). It has the original tires and this was my first complaint too. The other posts are correct.
1. Stock Goodyears suck below 50-60 degrees.
2. All tires cycle out, and typically do so by the time they are down to 2-3/32nds of tread depth. (my personal experience at least)
I'm planning to buy a new set soon, probably Kumho MX's.

I had some brand spanking new Hoosier "R" compound tires in my basment. My wife told be to get them out. You could smell the rubber and other chemical coumpounds coming off the tires. I thought it smelled good, but then again I like the smeel of Hot Brake dust, buring rubber and 100 octane race exhaust too.
Put the tires in black plastic garbage bags and in the garage untill I mounted them on rims.

Ohhh, there's nothing better than the smell of fresh race rubber.
