Mine is defiantly LED with a sealed housing, it is sold as a complete sealed package.
I have had the whole assembly apart to install my video camera and the outer casing had to be cut open to gain access to the LED's, then epoxied back together to seal it back up.
E-bay is one source you might check. I have seen the 3rd brake light assemblies for sale there in the past for around $30.
hahaha. now u know. learn sumthin every day. i also need to get my PRNDL fixed....(the term used for the gear shift indicator on an automatic, tech's usually pronounce it "prindle" haha)

Indeed I do learn somethin new everyday - and I have a long way to go yet.....lol
A PRNDL would be a Powerglide.... PRNDLL = Turbo 350 or 400
I dunno what a C5 A4 would be - mine's an MN6....
I don't know what kind of third-light is in your car but this is what is in the C5s...and it's not a push-in bulb...it's an LED package that cannot be bought at Wally World or AutoZone.
Picture credit to GBVette from his camera install page. This IS the same light assembly that was in my previous C5s too. How about posting a pic of your push-in bulb light
Mines a '99 and it does NOT have LED. I have changed the bulb twice since I bought it. Maybe the newer C5 has LED but my 99 has a incandesent push in bulb (197 I think). I will get a photo tomorrow, for the nonbelievers.
I'd like to see the pic. Also; look over the fixture assembly for any numbers, or an ID tag.

Huh?????
you got that right! you DO have a long way to go yet
P - Park
R - Reverse
N - Neutral
D - Drive
L - Low
not specific to a powerglide transmission, but a powerglide IS a two speed transmission.
OR
P - Park
R - Reverse
N - Neutral
3 - 3rd gear
2 - 2nd gear
1 - 1st gear
again, not specific to a TH350 or 400, but they ARE three speed transmissions.
I believe the C5 A4 is a four speed transmission (I guess that's why it's called an "A4" Automatic 4 speed?), so the second one would apply. only with an Overdrive (with an "O" circling the "D")
