Default Tranny Leak, advice!?

I have what appears to be a tranny leak. There is fluid on the ground form the rear of the car. it is recent but there is a good bit on the ground. I am not for sure that it is the tranny although I have a feeling that it is. I looked under the car and it appears.. totally uneducated that it is coming from the pipes. So I am saying slightly educated that it is the tranny.

Is it a problem to drive it like this. or are some new gears on the way? maybe 3.73 or even....4.10?

All help is appeciated

Are you sure it isn't the diff that is leaking? My was leaking and I had the seals replaced $600 later.

Default leak

Clean all the liquid off the underside of the car. Drive it a short distance and see where its coming from. There are seals in the diff, from the tranny to the diff and it might even be a leak around the tranny pan.

I recommend that you first determine the leaking location.

Historically the rear end seals leak.

Crawl under the rear of the Vette and run you finger around the top of the differential. If you get 'fresh' fluid it is most likely the differential.

If you have access to a lift the process is made easier.

If the vette is out of warranty, then a gear change would be beneficial.

Do you have the A4 or MN6?

I had both

The diff leaked and I had it fixed under warranty. Its quite a large job and they stripped the rear end down. After a service, the Dealer overfilled the tranny and it leaked through a vent. They took a little fluid out and solved the problem.

yup, looks like a leak, that's a pretty common problem with these cars...you've got pm.

What color is the fluid? What's it smell like?

I thnik I have the same problem. Does your leak or the fluid on the ground by the rear part of the vehicle, mine is reddish in color and I found mine almost by the rear, near where the H-pipe and the Catback meets, where the flange is, I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow. Hopefully it is still going to be under warranty but I highly doubt it. I got an '03, so technically if you count 2003-2004 1 year, 2004 -2005 2nd year and 2005-2006 3rd year. So my warranty is up, my extended warranty kicks in but I have a $200 deductible.

200 dollars will be a good deal if that is all it costs you. It took me several trips to the dealer to get it completly stopped. You might want to make sure the dealer will warranty the work in case you have to bring it back. By the way, the dealer will have the day that your car was put in service so the origianl warranty starts running from that date.
Good luck

I took mine to the Chevy dealer and the tranny guy drained the fluid, cleaned off the outside of the case and put some high temp silicone around the thing. They then refilled left it set for a while. This all happened two years ago and every time I put it on the lift I check it out. No leaks yet. Most guys would laugh at doing it this way but it only cost me $75 and it seems to be doing the job. I check it frequently.

Came back from the dealer today. Actually I wasn't able to use my GMPP since my deductible is $200 and the actual repair only cost about $170. No harm no foul, at least it's not $1000 repair. They change the gasket from the trans pan, replaced the tranny fluid and there is also a loose fitting that they tightened, hopefully this is all there is. But the dealer said that the warranty on parts/labor is 12 months/12,000 miles. So we'll see by tomorrow, will check my garage floor again.

My 2001 had a big leak under it when I started it for the first time since November. I brought it to the dealer - they had it for 3 days.

replaced Trans pump seal
also replaced leaking rear axle boot
also replaced power door lock modules

they also changed oil and trans fluid/filter

good thing I had extended warranty. It cost about $2000 to fix.
