Use Wal-mart TECH 1, Fully Synthetic oil and FRAM filter. Make sure it says "fully synthetic". Don't get the cheap stuff for the Corvette.
Wal-mart brand meets GM 4718M and a few more specs. that even Mobil 1 cannot meet.
(Just wanted to see if anyone was really reading these!)
Bought my 99 used from Douglas Jeep Polaris in Venice Fl. They put in the cheap stuff and a white label filter when they serviced the car prior to delivery. 32 days after purchase I was looking at a $10k dealer installed engine. Nuff said.
K & N. The one inch nut at the bottom is the greatest invention known to man on a filter. Saw an add in Motor trend for a outfit in San Diego for $8.99. Good deal
Read your owner's manual and actually read your oil filler cap. When you do that, you'll find that there is NOT a particular brand of oil that is recommended.
What is recommended is an oil that meets GM4718M and that's it. Beyond that, you're either into oil analysis, voodoo or sheep following. I've even seen it said on BoilIsTheOilGuy, that some of the SuperTech (Walmart as mentioned by texhawk) oils are suspected of being made either by Exxon-Mobil or Warren.
Just changed mine yesterday Mobil 1 5w-30 (6.5 quarts),and filter again Mobil 1. it`s little pricey but I guess worth it.
and it says it on your oil filler cap too. 6.5 qrts on my 2000.
7 seems to make it too full and there is a service bullitin out that says over the full line will cause the counter wieghts on the crank to churn up the oil. and in turn your lifters will cause noise because they have foamed oil in them. the air bubbles cause them to not pump up enough and cause clatter. i thaught my car was pinging and the tech showed me the problem and no more ping noise.

my cap reads as follows,
"ENGINE OIL"
"sae"
"5w-30"
"Mobile 1"
"factory fill"
"NOTICE"
"see owners manual"
"special engine oil required"
seems kinda like a recomendation to me!
i guess they could just be trying to tell you the factory uses it
i am sure that the amsoil or others that meet the minimum requirements are just fine. some may exceed the factory fill. but what really IS
the GM4718m???
Anybody use the Mobil-1 0W-30? I would imagine that it protects the same way as a 5W-30 or 10W-30 would when up to temps and has the advantage of flowing better than the others when cold.
I have the oil analysis results which prove that the German made Castrol Syntec 0w30 is a considerably better choice than Mobil 1 5w30.
I've never seen oil analysis results with Mobil 1 5w30 in an LS1 that even come close to the results I've been consistently getting with GC 0w30.
Mobil 1's advertising is very good, it makes people think it's the best oil but it's really just an ok oil. There are a lot of better synthetic oils out there than Mobil 1 (such as Amsoil or Redline)
Spend some time on www.bobistheoilguy.com (specifically the used oil analysis section of the message board) and you'll believe me.
First off ... Congrats and Welcome! A new millennium car. Very Cool. Enjoy it, I know you will.
Second, take your owners manual and leave it in the bathroom. It makes great "crapper" fodder. Read it and it will give a l lot relevant information. It's bit on the dry side, but if read a little at time, it's worth it.

The main requirement of the GM 4718M spec. for the Corvette is better performance in high temperature/high shear environments, and lower oxidation rate, also a necessity in an engine generating high oil temperatures. These differences mandate synthetic oil because petroleum-based oils cannot meet the higher requirements. Better high temperature/high shear numbers and lower oxidation rates are characteristic of all quality synthetic oils. Practically all the name brand synthetic oils like to mention they meet the Corvette spec. even if it does not appear on the label. In fact, even the new Mobil 1 bottles do not specifically mention the GM 4718M spec.
Don't worry so much about the 4718M spec and just look for a major brand of synthetic oil meeting API SL/SM or ILSAC GF-3 or 4, like Amsoil, Red Line, Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, Quaker State Full Synthetic, or Havoline Synthetic to name a few.
(Just kidding about the Walmart synthetic in earlier post)
