Default jacking precautions?

Is there any prohibition against opening the car door while car is on jack stands or otherwise off the ground? A mechanic friend told me you should not open the door under those conditions as the car will "flex" & could damage something.

Anything in the tech manual regarding this?

From everything said on the Forum here, that's an old wives tale. Apparently the older Vettes were affected but the C5 is rigid.

All I can say is I've opened my doors many times when its been in the air - gently

My understanding from other posts is the whole "flexing" issue is a myth. I would be more concerned just about the general safety of opening the car door while the car is up in the air.

It's total that is just a carry over from the old days. The C5 frame is about as rigid as it gets. You can have the roof off, open and close the doors or the hood and hatch till your hears content. Won't make a difference.

To check to see if I had an internal seal leak in my steering rack, I jacked the front of the car, placed it on jack stands, opened the driver's door, got in, turned the engine on, and turned the wheels side to side. In all this, there was no problem. It was scary, nevertheless, because if I had put it on gear by mistake...

C5's and C6's do not flex. These cars are as solid as you can get.

You can open your doors, hood and hatch or trunk with no problem at all.
