Tried to replace the rotors on my 02 ZO6. Since I've replaced the pads I thought it would be easy. It started out smooth enough. I even got the red calipers off without having to bleed the brakes. When I tried to loosen the two 21mm bolts from the caliper "bracket" things came to a screeching halt. They wouldn't budge. 3/4" socket with WD40 but no go (yes I'm trying in the proper direction "lefty loosey").
I'm assuming I have to get it on a lift for more leverage or best case find someone with an impact wrench.
An impact is very helpful. They are torqued to 125 ftlb and loctited from the factory. You may be able to turn the wheels to full lock and use a breaker bar for leverage to break them loose. I use a jack handle and slide it over the ratchet handle when I need more leverage and I can't use my impact.
Be sure to loctite all the bolts and but them back to torque spec when you do the install.
Heh just did the rotors unplug the abs sensors and loosen the top bolt from the bottom side using a wrench with a 12 inch extension bar..loosen bottom from the top side using same extension. Jack car high enough to get the 12 inch extension on the wrench...Have faith it will give once you get past the 125 lbs of torque. Use gloves to protect your hands (more confidence you won't damage your digits when it gives) and give it ....the bolt will creak loose.
Hope this helps Ian
i just recently did mine, i only have cheapy tools from kragen, just a 3/8's ratchet set, and i got it off. i put the socket on, and tapped it a few times with a hammer and it came loose pretty quickly.
I got them off first time using the method mentioned by Brad above - turn the front wheel and use a really long breaker bar. Rears are harder as you can't get a good angle on the bar. Helps to have the car a little higher when you try this on the rear. Once you get them off the first time, they aren't so bad next rotor change out...
FYI, the service manual requires changing those bolts. I change mine annually, but since I go through several sets of rotors in a season, I reuse the bolts, cleaning them and putting on new red locktite each time.
I used a wrench (didn't want to break my wratchet) and my little sledge. Took a bunch a wacks, primitive, but it worked fine. I tightened them using the same method!
