Default Goodyear SC Tires vs. Michelin PS2's

I'm running stock Supercars and am debating a switch to PS2's. Does anyone have any experience with the Michelins? Are they better in the dry than the stock SC tires and are they quieter?

Thanks,

Rick

I've owned both. Tried the PS2s and went back to the SCs for the better dry grip. The PS2s rode fine and were quiet, but the dry grip suffered. Several of the local autoxers in my area have the same opinion. They could not compete as well with the PS2s as they had with the SCs against cars still running SCs.

I have had them both. In the dry, fully warmed (track conditions), I don't see much difference, but would give a slight advantage to the PS2 in terms of grip. I think the SC might have stiffer sidewalls. But in the wet (or cold), no comparison, the PS2 is far superior. As for noise, I don't know. Neither impressed me as noisy. But, I drive my street tires on the track, so they get pretty roughed up before accumulating many miles, and tend to make some noise that would not be there if conservatively driven. For an all-around street tire, I would buy the PS2.

If my perception of the SC being stiffer is correct, I wonder if that could be contributing to the better performance more than the absolute grip. I don't do any autox, but I assume the sharper turn in of a stiffer tire would help. My events are untimed HPDEs, so I can only offer the seat-of-the-pants perception. Maybe someone with timed road course experience will chime in.

Thank you both for the feedback. This is exactly what I was looking for. I have two new rear SC's and I'm trying to decide between just purchasing new front SC's or replacing the SC's with PS2's all the way around.

I have seen them run extensively in both low speed autox and on road courses. The consensus around here is that the SCs are a better track tire. Not night and day better, but better. At the NCCC Nationals last year at Brainerd Int'l ( a very high speed track with speeds on the straight about 160 in a Z06 and through turn 1 at about 130) the SCs ruled the street tire class.

I have PS2's now as a replacement for the stock SC's. No way would I go back to the Goodyears. I find the Michelins superior in every way, wet, dry, noise, ride, etc. I drive fairly aggressively even though I don't auto-x. We have some nice twisty mountain roads where I live and the tires give me all the confidence I need. On some types of pavement I found the Goodyears so noisy you couldn't have a conversation in the car, not with the Michelins. Even tire wear seems to be better.

If I'm not mistaken, the Tire Rack has not tested the two tires head to head and compared results. User ratings are meaningless, they are nothing but opinions. Track results matter in answering this topic's question about dry grip and I gave my observed track results.

My opinion is that for the track only, go with the Goodyears. However, for track only tires, there are better tires. For street driving, NO QUESTION, go with the PS2s. They are much better real world tires, including a world where rain, cold temperatures, and even snow are a possibliity.

Default Go with PS2s

I have the PS2s and road race the car all the time. To me they have great traction. A nice thing about them is they have traction when cold, both cold on the track and cold weather. On the track I can run away from some of the guys on full race tires till they get them heated up, then of course they pass me.

The PS2s are also good in rain. For all these reasons I'm also putting a set on my CTS-V, which is used on the street because my wife won't let me trash another car.

By Goodyear SC I don't know if you mean the F1 tire. If so don't get it. It is absolutely terrible at any temperature below 50 deg. At freezing temperature they are downright dangerous. And wet traction is poor, at least as the tread wears down, which is very fast.

The PS2 is a great street tire and competent track tire. The only issue I was replying to was the ultimate dry grip. I think the F1SCs are superior in that respect and I've seen track results that back that up.
On the subject of wet grip, my autox experience in the rain is that SCs grip very well until there is even a hint of standing water. Then you are going to hydroplane. I saw a Regional NCCC event run in the rain a few years ago and the overall winner was a C4 on full 12.5" Avon slicks. But the rain was only enough to keep the track wet. No standing water. The Z06s on SCs finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th overall that day.
