I wish I had a dollar for every post where someone got the "pull key" message after having the column lock recall done

It could be simply that the resistor pellet on your key needs cleaned. Wipe each side with some denatured alcohol.

Hopefully, that's all it is.

Either way, with a 6-speed, you should install a Column Lock Bypass .

No, it's not what they installed at the dealer.

From what I understand the recall now does two "main" things:

1. Shuts off fuel flow in the event of a "lock".
2. Removes, or blocks off, the locking plate so that the steering will not lock up, in the even of a "lock".

NOTHING has been done to prevent the false occurence of a "lock" Whatever circuit is malfunctioning, and causing this "false lock" to occur, has not been changed.

You can still be stranded, after the recall is done. GM is doing a good thing by removing the locking plate so that you at least will not loose your steering if it were ever to occur while driving. I don't know that it will, or ever has occured, while the car is in motion. I have read claims of it happening while driving, on this forum, but have never seen any evidence.

Do yourself a favor, install a CLB, and never think about this issue again

1. Clean the resistor pellet on the key
2. check your battery condition. A weak battery can throw anumber of DIC messages including pull key and wait 10 seconds.

A weak battery can cause this

Get a 8 mm wrench and tighten the posts

Start with the easy things 1st.
Clean the key resistor.
Check battery charge, clean and tighten terminals.
Then proceed on to the other stuff if these 1st 2 don't
cure the problem.
Best of luck

I kept having that problem when I had my 98 and the Dealer ended up pulling the recall harness and putting everything back to stock except that the pin or plate that was taken out of the column lock. Never had another problem. I tried all the other stuff first. Didn't have a problem until the dealer worked on it. GM told them to do what they did.

I know that the 02's are somewhat differant.

Peter, this is exactly what my dealer did with mine..same as stated here, GM tech people told the dealer mechanic to put it back to stock wiring and leave the blank plate in. Column can not lock. I do have a CLB that I need to install sometime as that way I can eliminate the actuator. Gm had (has ? ) a multitude of problems with the relays they used for the original fixes. The black relays and the white relays are BOTH unreliable. I am an A4 by the way....

Well, ok, maybe not...

Sorry bud, just trying to lighten your mood.. they can be frustrating but try not too worry too much... Stuff happens... until it does, don't panic. Try asking how many people have gotten the "Pull Key and..." and have experienced ZERO problems after...

Check the EASY stuff...

Is your battery weak?
Clean the pellet.
Clean your battery posts.

Try not to worry... You could drive it 5 years and never get that "pull Key alarm again... and you will have taken twice that many years off of your life worrying... Take a deep breath.... hold it... hold it... longer...
AHHHHHHHHHHHH

Go drive that baby and just worry about driving too fast and getting a ticket... no other worries!!
