I'm lookin to get a 2001 to 2004 coupe or rag. What's the RWHP difference between the two? (stock to stock would the auto give-up 10-15hp?) What year did GM up the torque for the auto? I wasn't too fond of the factory shifter on the one I tested at the dealer. The auto with a gear is an easy no brainer for light to light go. It seems the stick cars fetch a little more $$$. I just got rid of a Grand National and SVT Cobra lookin to move up a notch or 2. Thanx 4 any input.
Stock for Stock, it is a drivers race. For me the daily drive to the city killed me with a stick. But HP wise, they are really close from the #s I have seen here.

The stick has about a 15% loss of HP to the rear wheels where as the auto has about an 18% or so. In reality, it may come down to the driver like mentioned above.
Do the auto's resale as well as the sticks? Seems to be alot more sticks 4sale. Buddy of mine sold his 01 torch rag last year with auto and everyone comin said "wish it ws a stick" Ended up droppin the price to get a sale.
GM raised the torque #'s in 2001. A4's went from 350 to 360, while the M6's went up to 375. I went the A4 route only because I daily drive it from April to October in a huge city (Toronto), with a lot of stop and go traffic. Otherwise I would have went M6. I made sure I got the 3.15 geared performance axle though. I will swap them out for 3.73's sometime this year, but the 3.15's offer a tad more punch than the stardard 2.73 ratio.

Many more automatics were made, and the 6sp was actually a $800-900 option. I'll agree, however, that it's more of a personal preference than a performance advantage on the street.

Yup. Performance reports from 2001 indicated that the enhanced torque curve meant that the post-2001 A4 was as quick as the pre-2001 MN6. Depends on what year you end up with.
