This chart is with 18x315/35 tires

rpm6500
1ST 42
2ND 61
3RD 88
4TH 125
5TH 149

150-152 about top speed with 4.10s on a MN12 at 6600 rpms.

If your looking for TOP speed you many want to consided the stock 3.42 rear end.

So there are trade offs.

what is the actual top speed of a 02 Z06 with 3.42?? Is it redline or drag limited?

So if you add more HP on a Drag Limited car you will gain more top speed untill you reach your "redline Limit" In which you would need more gear to up that top speed.... Is this correct?

I apologize for jumping into your thread, but....I have some similar questions. BTW, I am in NC as well.

I have a 2001 Zo6 that we are prepping to run SCCA hillclimbs/solo1 stuff. Most hillclimbs will be 1st/2cnd gear, with some quick shifts to 3rd and 4th (exception being SnowShoe and Giants Despair). We could put some serious gear in the car, and be OK. But, I am considering making this car street legal as well. Would be weekend car only.

Any suggestions on gearing? Tom, if I understand your earlier post, Z`s come with a 3:42 stock. I would think a 4:10 would work well for us, and still be streetable.

Also, any ideas on cost of the ratio change?

4.10s are MUCH better for acceleration, drag racing, auto-X and YES hill climbs and still extreemly streetable. Watch your class asignments when you change something like gears.

4.10s on road courses?? well ppl have different opinions on that. I run a 3.42 on a MN6 which is OK and I like better then a 3.42 MN12. The MN12 with a 4.10 I had the opportunity to drive was horable. Car also had a LG 2X cam. Car had no guts out of corners as you spent too much time shifting in all the wrong places to keep the RPMS above 4000.

TQ gets you UP 5000 or 5250 rpms, Hp gets you above 5250 rpms to red line. Increase HP and Increase red line and you have higher top end.

HOWEVER, ( notice big type) what are you going to use your car for???

Drag racing?? you never see above 130mph so why have it. Work with a tuner to get the most acceleration out of your car up to 120-125 mph.

auto-x ?? short fast out of corners, need tq to get to 80 mph, not much more.

Road racing?? depends on the track. Even on VIR I all most never see speeds above 150 mph, 4th gear red line of 6750, for more then 100 feet. But getting out of 40 mph corners and up to 100 mph, All the time. Plus I dont have the HP for much more then 150-151 mph on a 4000 foot straight with a 100 foot elevation increase. ( I run about 400 to the ground).

Now those hill climbs sound interesteing. a combination of auto-x and time trials. Need to get out of some tight corners, some short accelerations, hard on the brakes and an other tight coner the hard on the gass and wham. you done. Phew.

Mash IMO if it is worth anything YES a 4.10 would work better for you. Get the car tuned too. Low end torque to get you out of those corners vs high end HP.

It is a challange. We want the best out of our cars to do everthing. and it just ain't going to happen. We have to pick where we want to do our fights and tune for that.

Do I want to do more then 150 mph ?? damn straight, so I am looking at a new engine to get me 500-525 to the ground. But then again that also means new clutch, GM motorsports trans ( different gearing) and 3.73 gears, PLUS BBKs to slow the Golden Eagle down for those 40-50 mph corners.

However, Cage and saftey first.
