I have been quoted that amount to have my front brake pads installed and rotors turned. I bought the raybestos ceramics for 80 bucks with shipping. Is this installation quote to high. And what does he mean by the part of turning the rotors?

not toooo bad, but i would just buy new rotors. go to gmpartsdirect.com and get some slotted drilled ones for 40 a piece. turning the rotors mean they smooth the face down so there is no groves or pitts so the new brake pads will meet flat on the rotor. without turning or new rotors, your new pads will not make 100% contact with the rotor and olny rub on the ridges. with new pads, one or the other need to be done
You can buy two brand new OEM style rotors from NAPA for $27 each and install the pads and the rotors yourself. We roadcourse guys do that all the time. Nothing difficult. If you have never done this, make sure there is a professional there or someone who has done it before to guide you the first time. Its very important!

Make sure everthing is tight to proper torque!! Just before my C5 was delivered to me, it got new rotors and pads. A few months later one of the calipers came loose!!!!! I checked the bolts on all 4 and found every bolt to be well below proper torque spec. Once I replaced the missing bolt that fell out, and got the rest of them properly tightened, everthing has been just fine.

The price is probably a little high but not bad. As others have said, turning the rotor is placing it on a lathe and resurfacing the braking surface to remove any grooves or imperfections. You never want to put new pads on worn or rutted rotors as the new pads will bed improperly on the worn rotors and wear unevenly. You may be better off just replacing the rotors as well.

If you are not experiencing pulsating pedal or uneven braking I wouldn't get the rotors turned. It's just a money making scam from brake installers. This is where they make their money. And they wear down your rotors at the same time. Also if you visit brake web sites like Baer they say to brake in new pads with old rotors and new rotors with old pads. Needless to say these old parts should be in good operating condition. So don't waste your money unless you have to.

That does not seem to out of line for at least an hour worth of work.
I replaced my front pads myself (first time not taking it somewhere). Very easy and no problems and I had a chance to clean the brake dust off the calipers.
I printed off step by step instructions someone posted a while back and used for reference when I did the job.
I'll see if I can find it and post.
The fee seems about right for the work they are doing for you. Just installing new pads this past weekend cost me 145, and I supplied the pads. Good luck!
