I just bought a 98 Coupe and it doesn't have homelink or a compass, the only two things I miss from my old car. My question is, has anyone installed one of the Gentex mirrors that have homelink and a compass built in? That's a handy little gadget.
Hey ronwc,
When you hooked up your mirror, was it plug & play or did it require a new wiring harness?
Clarifying my question...
My vette is a 2004. I bought a used Gentex GTNX-177 and a new Magna Donnelly 19709 Compass Mirrors. I've got information from both Gentex and Donnelly regarding the pinout functions and they appear to match the factory connector wire code of the 04 auto-dim mirrors. I just want to check to see if anyone had tried to direct plug in the factory connector into the mirror and if so, did it work? Trying to save time here.
The mirror I bought used off ebay for $75 came with a short wiring harness. If I remember correctly, there were four wires on my 98. Just used a volt meter to check + and -, wired it up quick and easy. Works good, took the compass a while to settle in after programming. The auto dim works perfect with the top down, but the small back window on the vert affects it when top is up - still a very good mod -

If you want your interior lights (when triggered by opening the door) to work properly, you'll need a new harness. I installed a Donnelly electrochromatic compass mirror on my '98 4-5 years ago, and this is what I had to do. It's no big deal--took 45 minutes to install, and I'm old and slow.
