I'm picking up my Yellow '02 Z06 today. It has 13,000 miles....
I'm hoping that even though there are a good number of posts listed, it is still a small percentage of the total number of vettes in this forum....
Any other tips I should know besides putting it in reverse when parked?
On a Z06-centric board (not CF), a poll showed over a third of members experiencing tranny issues. That more reflects driving issues than an inherent issue with the tranny. Missed shifts do take a toll. Ditto unremedied clutch pedal issues. Hopefully your new acquisition will be free of tranny issues.
First thing I'd do is check the clutch fluid. Second thing is warm the oil to over 100 and see if the shifting action under power is free of grinding sounds. Then I'd repeat the test with shifts over 5500. Absence of grinding is a good sign.
I guess it's a good thing that I'm getting the extended warranty!! Should I have someone make sure the clutch is properly adjusted or is this something I don't have to worry about?

If the extended warranty is a GMPP, you're in good shape.
Regarding the clutch, there are no easy ways to adjust it. But....
Better start checking and changing the clutch fluid if you're running the stock Z06 clutch.
To do that check the fluid in the clutch master cylinder (reservoir). You'll probably find some black nasty fluid that's been cooked from heat. The stock clutch in the LS1/2/6/7 all can suffer from pedal woes if the clutch fluid is allowed to degenerate.
Gotta be careful if the clutch pedal begins to act up. It can lead to missed shifts due to an incomplete clutch disengagement. That, of course, is a direct path to tranny issues.

I would suggest you purchasing a GMPP warranty as I have spoken to many owners and they all so far have had a trans rebuild due to a simular failure. It will be your "peace of mine".
I'm getting the warranty through my credit union. I don't remember the name off hand but they said the company has been around for many years and have taken good care of members.
I will check the clutch fluid and have it flushed if needed. I just flushed the power steering, brake and tranny fluid in my truck.
What would you recommend for motor oil? I used Amsoil in my harley and it actually ran 15 degrees cooler and seemed to have a bit more zip. After 6,000 miles it came out like new. My buddy said it's because amsoil doesn't clean the engine, but I was told it's because the oil doesn't burn or break down which is what turns oil black.
I love that BS smiley. Could have used that in the motorcycle forum.

I recommend the GMPP as I have had experience with this first hand on my Truck. I pay a $100 ded. and the rest is covered. Plus the GM dealerships are tied to this system. As far as the Oil, I have been using Mobile one for the last 10 years and have had gass engine go 300K befor showing signs of oil burning. I would imagine that AMSOIL, Lucus or even Redline racing oils will meet or exceed the specs for the LS6. Mobile one is just more accessible than some of the others for me.
I am the second owner of a 2002 Z06, 17,000 miles. 2nd gear feels just a little "off" when downshifting. Guessing it is indeed a syncro. Do you guys know if this is something that would be fixed with the recall even though I am 2nd owner and it is past the 3 year part of the warranty?

Dan,
AMSOIL SAE and Series 2000 Synthetics have very high levels of detergents which is supported by used oil analysis reports such as this one (this from a fellow forum member's 99 C5): Corvette C5 AMSOIL Series 2000 0w30 Used Oil Analysis Report
In this report the 6/24 and 5/6 samples were AMSOIL Series 2000 0w30, the 3/11 sample was German Castrol 0w30. Compare the levels of Magnesium (a detergent/dispersant) in the AMSOIL to the German Castrol and to the universal averages for the lab. It is about double the average.
AMSOIL may come out very dark on the first oil change as it cleans out the engine, but likely will be lighter after that as it keeps the engine clean.

Not sure what recall you're referring to. There hasn't been a tranny recall. In any case GM's responsibility ends at 36/36 unless a GMPP is in force before hand.
Most trannies are a bit stiff until warmed up (oil temp >100). Once warm though, the tranny should be smooth but still notchy through the shift gates.
My trannies have been perfect through 500+ passes in three Z06s. But I help that along by
(1) changing the tranny fluid at 18K intervals,
(2) taking good care of the clutch, and
(3) not missing shifts.
So, you might want to change the tranny fluid and see if it helps your second gear issue.
I want to know if any of you have had any major problems withy our Manual Trans? I recently had third gear synchronizer go, along with third gear. My Z is an 03 and only has 16K miles. The dealership (Tom Jumper) is telling me that this a common issue. Well how common is COMMON? Should I expect this to happen again in 16k miles? Is this a design flaw in the transmission? If anyone has some insight please fill me in.

What recall? I am not aware of any transmission recall, and the dealer didn't say anything to me either about a recall when repairing my car.
This typically would be a warranty only repair. And it gets 14 hours of labor plus parts, so plan on spending some $$$.
You can save yourself alot of time, money and most of all headache and do it right the first time. g force transmissions sells a kit with hardened shafts , gears , sincro assembly , the works. Im blown with nos 640rwhp shifts great no problems anymore. Spent $1,800 in parts fixing problems some 2 times. $3,000 with all new g force parts no issuesanymore i can shift hard and not have to worry about it. These problems started with just a 100hp nos shot , i did the tranny when i installed the blower. And the t56 is super easy to rebuild.
21k 2002 Z06, BPP shifter, Blackwing...not a single problem yet with the tranny. Of course I don't abuse it either.
I am not one to abuse my equipment either, however it is very hard to resist the urge to go through the gears when you own one of these great american muscle cars!

I will keep it in mind if it were to need another rebuild in the future. Then again I may be the owner of a 07 ZO6 by that time.
I purchased my GMPP today, I was gearing towards the 36/36K/100deductible, however Dennis at Fitchner Chevrolet said that since I don't drive my car but about 8-9K per year I should go with the 48/32K/100 and get an additional year but loosing 4K miles. Seeing how I really don;t drive it more than that it really made better sence to get the additional year. Besides I saved myself a Whopping 15$ selecting the 48 month plan.
The Key to this whole thing is getting the GMPP while your GM warranty is still intact, and your car is under 24K miles!!! to all!!
